Well, we did get two versions of the first Doctor after William Hartnell.

Not in-universe. ONly because Hartnell had passed.

Well, if the 9th actor didn't hate DW... Tennant likes DW so he agrees to everything. The 8th actor also likes DW and is cast in many audio plays and the War D. The 7th is kinda old and doesn't work much. 11 and 12 aren't that popular. So.

Uh, 11 is very popular.

Yeah, but his last couple of seasons are where the trainwreck starts leaving the tracks.

Everyone since Ten has been crap though, whether due to the writing or the acting, so I can see why they keep trying to recapture that momentum by briefly bringing him back.

Even if you don't like Moffat or 11, 11's run - especially season 5 and the specials - was just as popular as 10's run.

I love how OP just glosses over the fact that Tennant is the only actor who has agreed to return *eye roll*
Matt Smith said no. Peter Capaldi said no. Obviously you can imagine what Christopher Eccleston’s response would be if they asked him. Most of the doctors from Classic Who have passed away. About half? More? of the surviving ones have come back in the audiobooks/radio dramas.

I do hope Matt Smith comes back eventually, because he is absolutely one of the great Doctor actors for me. And I would leave to see him taking the role in some Big Finish stuff or something.

Not that any of the modern Doctors is bad - and I enjoy Tennant's run a lot more than Smith's really - but in terms of casting I think Smith is the best casting choice they've made with the modern Doctor.

No real judgment but it always bums me out when an actor is lucky enough to get that iconic a role but doesn’t seem that invested in it?

I think one part of it is not wanting to be typecast.

I think Ecclestone protesting on-set abuse is a different case, though.

It buns me out that Peter Capaldi won’t return to Doctor Who because Twelve’s my favorite.

It makes me sad he and Smith won't because they are my two favorites (Pertwee comes third).

Eccleston recently went on a very up front rant about what it would take for him to come back to the TV show, so you are very correct. I don't think anyone among the names he listed would dare ask him, I don't think the BBC in general would dare.

Capaldi and Tennant are both life-long fans of the show since childhood but seemingly have a different approach to how to handle their ascended fanboy status. Capaldi likes the idea his Doctor is still out there somewhere but the time has past and he thinks coming back would undo that magic. Tennant seems happy to come back when asked, though it's not like he's back *all* the time. He seems to have found his place no longer chasing film roles and instead doing stuff like GO and occasional theatre work.

I'm not sure about Whittaker. In my head she's the most likely of the modern Doctors to consider coming back to the TV stuff after a few years have past, but on the other hand I wouldn't blame her for not wanting to open herself back up to anything other than going to conventions.

I'm really sad that we won't get more Capaldi because I do love Twelve. But I get what he means. Maybe for him it's a case of he got his boyhood dream role and he doesn't want to risk having too much of a good thing.

Yeah I would literally kill for PCap to come back, but I understand his reasoning and like, it's valid. Christopher Eccleston's at least doing Big Finish and his sets have the usual hit rate (so like, 1 or 2 good stories in every 3 story set), so I can be pretty content with him choosing to never come back to the show proper considering how awful things were for him behind the scenes. Matt Smith's like,,, he's gestured toward returning in the past, but he's obviously prioritizing other things atm and I can respect that - plus obviously the door's still somewhat open, so there's that. Whittaker hasn't been gone long enough for the question to be asked five billion times, so I can't really get a read on her yet, but I can def see the possibility - especially if whoever's in charge gets Mandip Gill on side, since they seemed to get along really well while filming.

FR he's so overrated it's been souring me on the original Tenth Doctor stuff, which kinda sucks because like, he WAS good actually! Just not the fuckin, specialest boy in the whole world who needs to be brought back every couple years until we're all sick of him.

This is exactly how I feel. He's good. But so are most of the other Doctors. Treating him like he's better, special, the only good Doctor sours a run that was actually good for me.

But bringing him back does not mean that he's the bestest specialest doctor

You're getting mad at the character for an assumption that you're bringing to the table in the first place
