Re: Rent or own?
(Anonymous) 2024-05-20 12:53 am (UTC)(link)My parents "own" their house. I put that in quotes because these days unless you're rich, no one owns their home. The only difference is whether you're paying rent to a landlord or a bank, so I don't really see how it matters.
Honestly, once I get things figured out with my job and know whether or not I'm going to have to move or not, I can't fucking *wait* to get back to an apartment. My parents' neighbors are constantly sticking their nose into my business, wanting to have conversations when I'm leaving/in a hurry to get somewhere, and it's so goddamn annoying. I just want to get back to a place without stupid suburban white picket fence neighborhood social norms where you're expected to talk about private things with strangers just because they ask and it's "rude" to tell them it's none of their business. To have to waste time standing on the lawn listening to them talk about stupid shit I don't care about when there are much more important things to do, just because I happened to get home at the same time they were getting the mail and again, it's considered rude to just go inside. (The one time I politely said that I was waiting for a phone call and excused myself, they went crying to my mom about it and I had to hear about it for weeks.) I just want to live somewhere where people leave me the hell alone and let me live my life and mind their own fucking business.
Not to mention stupid shit like having to take your garbage out on a specific day because that's when the garbage truck comes (rather than a dumpster that is there all the time so I can take it out when it's convenient for me) and having to water plants and take care of the yard (which I have to do when my parents are travelling, which they frequently do, and it's not like I'm going to refuse).
(I realize this isn't technically about renting vs. owning so much as the specific type of housing because you can rent a house in a neighborhood that would probably have the same types of issues I hate, and own a condo that's more anonymous/private like I'd prefer, but just speaking generally.)

(Anonymous) 2024-05-20 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)Sure, but if you have no interest in doing those things, there isn't a difference.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-20 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)Oof. I'll take "People who don't know how the world works" for $500, Alex.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-20 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)When you "pay rent" to a bank, you recoup a significant chunk of that money in equity; that's one very important difference. Especially with the way housing prices have been skyrocketing. Some friends of mine (who are much better off than me) bought a house seven or eight years ago, and if they sold now they would likely come out with, at minimum, 300K more than they paid. Even if we assume their mortgage/strata fees/etc. are coming out to a full 1K per month more than they would have been paying in rent, they'd still be coming out over 200K ahead, in just 7–8 years, and that's if they sold now, which they have no intention of doing. In another ten years they'll likely have well over a million dollars in equity thanks to their house.
Also, if you are in a situation where you are able to negotiate mortgage rates that are secure and are safely within your financial means, then you gain a level of housing security that renters won't ever have.

That comes across as really elitist and unless there just stops being rental properties available, then "housing security" is not an issue.
