[Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker]

Idk, I think it COULD have been a good reveal if this had been something that had actually been intended from the start and had been reflected by consistent thought out writing/foreshadowing. But it wasn't because nothing about this trilogy was consistent OR well thought out so.. yeah.

I feel the same way, too. I think I'd still have preferred her to be a nobody, but it also would have worked totally fine (aka you can't always get what you want and it doesn't mean it's ruined when a story goes another way) if they'd built up to it. Developed it. Instead it fell just as flat as "Somehow Palpatine returned" to me. :/

NA - This is word for word exactly how I feel on the matter! Well said!

"Not consistent or well thought out" is classic Star Wars dating from the original trilogy, though. I think some people are used to it or just resigned by now. I know I don't expect a solidly constructed narrative from Star Wars, I just watch it and enjoy the cool spaceship battles.

Same, that was my take. If that had been the original intent and it had had the appropriate buildup, it would have been fine. It's not an objectively bad idea on its face.

I liked it too.

"the hero is actually the villain's child" a) was already done and done better in the same series with as little development and b) did nothing interesting for anyone's characterization, and that's two strikes too many for me. but i do think the concept itself was interesting, especially if they had kept the antagonism between rey and ben solo/kylo ren, so at least you get the parallel of "the villain is the hero's child". just realizing that they had the character just switch the vowel placement in his name lmao.

I would have been okay, maybe if that was the plan from the beginning. But I think her being not related to anyone was brilliant and a better idea, and once that was there on the screen, changing it was stupid.

I disagree. It came out of nowhere considering Palpatine wasn't mentioned at all in the previous two films.

Also, the "anyone can be a Jedi" arc/point was shat all over with this reveal.
