I've seen antis argue that because a ship isn't canon you're not allowed to ship it. That venn diagram is almost a circle.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-25 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
What idiocy.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-25 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
This and OP's secret are so baffling I wonder if they're really happening because I know I'm not seeing it in my spaces, but I guess they are. I don't UNDERSTAND.

AYRT

I haven't seen them in my fandoms either, but I follow a fandom blog where people post things anonymously kinda like fandom secrets, and I have Seen Things.

DA
Oh yeah, it's happening A LOT

(Anonymous) 2024-05-25 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sad for anyone so imaginatively bankrupt. WTF do they think fandom IS?

IKR. Like, why are you here, man? Just go watch the show all over again.

+1

I've also seen them argue that because a ship got sunk in canon, people are no longer allowed to ship it, too.

This mindset I've seen nowadays always confused me, when I was big into shipping I was mainly into things that I knew would be nothing more than subtext in canon. I thought extrapolating was the point of fandom?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-25 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought there had always been at least afew of these folks.

Yeah, I thought these were around in Harry Potter fandom.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-25 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
A few, but they seem to be on the rise.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-25 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Certain parts of fandom do seem to have lost the ability to just... have fun. Shipping isn't meant to be about something being canon, if it is: cool, but if it never is: that's also cool. But there are some very loud people who want to be 'right' and 'win' so they hinge so much on their chosen ship being canon, and therefore 'winning' that they loose sight of actually enjoying themselves because fandom is now a competition.

It seems exhausting and those types are insufferable to deal with even if I like the ship because you can't have a normal fandom discussion with them, it's all about 'proving' that the ship will totes be canon guys!!! Instead of just enjoying the ship.

It’s so dismaying to see someone religious about a show poo-poo the finale because it didn't confirm their ship as the endgame. Like, there's one person I know who throws a tantrum every time a show she loves doesn't feature a 15-minute scene where her ship gets the happy ending with the white wedding and kiddies. Even if the lead ends up single but still kinda of close to the other half of her pairing. Like, hun, that's the point where you jump in and make what you happen - even if you can't write: boot up the Sims and get your girly her man.

I'm not saying that's what I did with Rebecca & Nathaniel from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, but I'm also not confirming that I never did it…

(Anonymous) 2024-05-26 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
There were always a few of these people, but now there a lot more.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-25 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I was a little surprised how many people just rolled with it when Buck on 9-1-1 became a canonically confirmed bisexual, because he wasn't with Eddie. Because I very much remember some people in the Teen Wolf fandom calling Jeff Davis (the creator) homophobic when he didn't put Stiles with Derek in the show. The same show that had several canon gay characters (like Danny, Ethan, Mason, Corey, and even Jackson at the end) and couples.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-26 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
I have never watched that show, but I follow someone who was rooting for Buck/Eddie, and the impression I get is that they feel it’s more likely than ever now that Buck is known to have an interest in men. I think that particular person would be fine with the current relationship being endgame, too, but some shippers might just be waiting to flip their shit if the show ends without canon Buck/Eddie.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-26 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
I was under the impression that all the canon gay characters and ships in Teen Wolf were pretty one-dimensional and boring? It seems confirmed canon queerness is cool with fans as long as it's a popular character, even if it doesn't make the popular ship with that character canon. The Witcher fandom loved Jaskier being confirmed bi and going on a year has yet to be upset that none of his lovers are Geralt.

Considering how much validation people in fandom need, it only makes sense that shippers would freak out if their ship isn't canon because that invalidates all of their ideas for what they thought the outcome would be. They don't get to be right on the internet and throw it up in everyone's face.

Things like this just remind me of the shenanigans that happened on the LJ Naruto Yaoi and shitpost comms.
I had entered the fandom when the initial ship wars had died down and people just went ham with any ship - even if the characters had never met each other or all they had was characters standing in the same panel. I was there when someone came up with the crackship Kishimoto x Sasuke because people were complaining about Sasuke featuring in the manga more than Naruto at one point. One of my online friends at the time was more into the femslash side and had told me about the amount of combo ships that the comm had come up with no matter how little sense it made (especially with characters like Konan who barely had any personality in the actual manga - the yuri shippers always found a way).
But even with more 'serious' ship, people overall knew that a lot of the ships weren't going to happen and just had fun with it - or at least they did in the circles I hung out in.

I never want my ships to be canon. Alternate timeline AUs aren't my jam, so if there's canon about how they become a couple and how they behave as one, the fic possibilities for them vanish.

I do think that social media & the ability to interact with creators has made this a lot worse, but I honestly think people being really fucking obnoxious and entitled about romances has happened for a long time and it's hardly a shift. Two words: Little Women.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-26 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't say that one bothers me very much, because I like having fewer interactions with tantrum-throwers. If they show themselves out, so much the better.
