Re: What popular tropes do you hate?

Can you explain it to me? Using very small and simple words, so that maybe this time I'll get it. Please?

Hurt/Comfort: Someone gets in a car accident and is taken care of by friends

Whump: Someone gets into a car accident, it falls into a ravine, they have to drag themselves up the ravine wall for 3 days, they get out of the ravine by crawling through a patch of brambles, are picked up by a serial killer hitchhiker, fight the hitchhiker, are rescued, and are taken care of my friends. Also, that someone has a six pack and cries like Jensen Ackles.

But I love this description.

Basically, wump is beating up the character for the pain and suffering. The focus of the fic is the whole process of the injuries and damages both mental and physical.

Hurt/comfort is beating up the character with more or equal focus on being rescued or dealing with the aftermath and recovery and comfort. The pain and suffering is a vehicle to get you to the comfort.

I think "wump" and "hurt/no comfort" tags are basically the same. Wump is just an older fan term I think.

I don't consider "hurt/no comfort" and whump to be the same. Anon's above explanation hits the nail for me. Whump is heaps of angst added on and on for the purpose of more and more drama, whereas hurt/no comfort to me is more of a single traumatic event without a happy/optimistic end.

To use anon's example, hurt/no comfort to me would be be a car accident in which a loved one dies and the fic ends with the MC still in pain and grieving.

AYRT You know, you're totally right. "hurt no comfort" probably overlaps with wump sometimes, but it doesn't necessarily have enough wumpage to be an equal tag.
