Fics where characters who aren't bad people in canon are deeply and unequivocally bad people, like Mob Boss AUs, or Serial Killer AUs. Also, fics which depict my ship in a pretty clear-cut victim/abuser dynamic.

Badness does nothing for me in its own right. I only find it sexy insofar as it exists in tension with the character's inner desire to be better/get better/feel better. (kinktomato, yadda yadda, it's just a personal taste thing.)

I'm the opposite. When a writer takes one of my magnificent bastards and tries to do what they'd be like if they were basically decent people, I balk and read something else. Guess we're both kind of set in our ways when it comes to alignment preferences, nonny.

I thought I was alone at this point. I hate mafia etc AUs
It makes sense if we are changing flavor (mob boss becoming intergalactic criminal, I dunno) but I just don't enjoy reading about characters becoming absolutely different people. I also really really hate Royalty AU

Yeah, definitely! If a character is non-conflictedly dark and violent in canon then it makes sense to put them in a dark and violent role in AUs. But if they're not that kind of character in canon then I am super not interested in seeing them characterized that way in fic.

Royalty AUs only work for me in situations where the character's royal status is analogous with their canon situation. A character who is extremely societally powerful in canon can potentially translate to a powerful royal in an AU. Or a character who is seen to have a high social standing but actually lacks any real power of their own can potentially translate into a prince under the thumb of a regent or something. It's a bit finnicky at the best of times, though, to keep the essence of the characters intact in a Royalty AU.

I'm not a big fan on mafia AUs but when they hit, they hit so well. It's a fine line to walk though and not many people manage to write it convincingly. Especially when they refuse to commit and make the characters actually bad people who do bad things, rather than just things that look badass.
