I got further in than you did, and it is 0% justice system and 100% fey political+magical fuckery. I noped out after getting through a lot of sex and into the dungeons of the Big Bad. I may revisit in non-audiobook form but I really can't take torture scenes via audiobook

Yikes

Is there a lot of torture in these books? That's not the impression I had, although I knew it was a plot point.

Not a lot, but there is quite a bit in the last chunk of the first book. It's more the torment-by-task and humiliation variety than straight-torture, if that makes a difference, but still pretty brutal.

DA but oh god that sounds even worse. I would take straight torture over torment humiliation any day of the week.

Before I yeeted myself out, there was a loyal retainer who showed up tortured and died, and then later there was the palace/dungeons of the Big Bad with various lovingly described injuries and around that point I asked myself if I really wanted to roll around in this as my happy funtiems audiobook and I decided no, I did not actually.

It's badly written wish fulfillment fantasy with sexy elves, so yeah, being punished by living in luxury makes a twisted sort of sense.

Thanks for the laugh, OP! Honestly, I can't argue, I would have been a lot more interested if Feyre had been a guy, too. Though he would have still been a bland protagonist who is constantly doing impulsive, stupid shit and getting himself in danger unnecessarily.

With that said, Feyre's punishment is what it is for a reason, which will be revealed later in the book (if you don't guess it first).

I read the first book like two years ago, and I'm only just now getting around to reading the second one. I hear the second one is considerably better than the first, but I don't think anything can really rescue it for me when the first book totally failed to get me invested in any of the characters or the central romance(s).

These books are so painfully straight and boring. I prefer Holly Black tbh.

Can't let the majority of the population have books to read.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-03 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, because someone else finding those books to straight and boring prevents others from reading them. Poor oppressed straights. Also, not our fault ~the majority of the pouplation~ has shit taste.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-03 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
C'mon, saying someone has "shit taste" because they're of a different sexual orientation than you, something people can't choose or change, is an asshole thing to do, no matter the orientation in question.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-03 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

Do you think people only read romances about their own orientation?

(Anonymous) 2024-06-03 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think straight people will survive this anon comment saying they didn't care for a series, lol.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-03 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it okay to be an asshole as long as the person you're being an asshole to survives it?

(Anonymous) 2024-06-03 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The shit taste is less about the sexual orientation depicted and more about the books being bland, boring and simply not very good.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-03 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow that is a record breaking jump there.
