This supposes that good writing alone is what makes people enjoy or want to read/watch a work. There's usually something else about it that's holding their interest: the genre; the world; the protagonist; the character dynamics.

An erotic novella about anal fisting might objectively be the best thing that's ever been written in the history of the written word, but someone who doesn't like anal fisting is never going to want to read it.

I agree. I had a co-worker who retired some time ago that talked about how young people are so spoiled when it comes to the amount and variety of media/entertainment that's available online nowadays. Like there's not just movies, tv dramas, or books, there's also K-dramas, anime, youtubers, tiktok, webcomics, video games, etc. etc.

And there's so much of it out there that you can afford to be a little picky or just outright avoid works from authors you don't agree with because you'll never get through all of it in a lifetime anyway. Spending time on a work you don't quite like means less time looking for something you'll really really love.

For example, I go through maybe about a dozen video games a year and around 50 books, but my backlog for both is still quite long with 100+ for video games and 1000+ for books. Plus so much new stuff gets added each year. I don't even have time to watch all the movies/tv shows I want to watch since I also have others things to do in life. I'm super picky and will drop something if it doesn't catch my attention within an alloted time, and yet, I still can easily put together a top 20 list for all the media types I consume (and every year, still find some new favorites).

I am always puzzled by adults who read children's fiction and get mad when the kids end up facing the danger and saving the day. Why would children want to read a story where the kids go to bed early and their parents and teachers have all the adventures? I get that it's not the way you want the real world to work, but it's not the real world.

There's something about calling this a trope that's bothering me. Because it definitely is a trope of fiction, but...it's not fictional behavior. I get being bothered with the concept, and I get that's where you're coming from, but i don't think people are putting it in books solely because it's popular. some of it is because children, real children, are loathe to involve adults...especially with addiction and abuse. Like...human beings in general tend not to involve other helpful human beings in addiction and abuse, you know?

I get the reaction, I get having it, I also sometimes have it, I don't get the understanding of realism here.

Yeah, I also dislike the whole number and I do usuay prefer quirky ones - I mean, I did enjoy Croatia. But I don't think that it would have won though.

Honestly I really loved it and love it still. During Eurovision it was my favorite. But I'm still happy it was disqualified.

It didn't stand any chance at winning, and even if it did, I'd still be glad it was disqualified because I was rooting for Croatia. If it helps ease your concerns OP, someone on the Eurovision subreddit did the math and investigated the officially published jury numbers and calculated from the gaps that Joost would've gotten 58 points from the jury. Nowhere near enough to win the thing given Nemo's deserved amount of 12 points, even if Joost had gotten a lot of the popular vote.

Given both Croatia and the Netherlands in the final, Joost would've assuredly leeched at least a bit of the popular vote from Croatia, and then Croatia might not have won the popular vote. My biggest disappointment this year was that Croatia didn't win, since it was an absolutely perfect banger and IIRC they haven't won it before.

I just hope if EBU has decided they are ready to DQ entries, that they will do the same to every entry in the future, instead of turning a blind eye to the horrible behavior of Sweden and even moreso Israel's 2022 Eurovision entry, what with the literally slapping reporters and forcing kisses onto people who didn't want them.
