"Would it be possible for you to link to secrets marked as spoilers (like the way you do for porn secrets), instead of just labelling them as spoilers right above the image? By the time you see the label, you've already seen the image and then it's too late. :("

[Poll #1444305]

Suggested:
- increase space between spoiler warning and secret
- move all spoilery secrets to the end of the post
- make spoiler warning text more noticeable (big and red?)

The problem with the text warning about the pic, no matter how much space between the warning and the pic, is that you still have to scroll down past the picture to get to the secrets below it.

Same problem with having the pictures at the end of the post-- you'll still have to scroll past them.

Perhaps you could list the shows that there are spoilers for above the cut, so people will know to read with care.

Spoiler secrets at the end of the post is a good idea. With big giant sparkly test reading SPOILERS! right above them.

What about declaring, I don't know, Tuesday, SPOILER Day and posting the marked secrets only on that day? I don't really care, because in a lot of my anime fandoms, the manga is far enough ahead of the anime that 'spoiler' has several definitions, most of them based on personal taste or lack of.

[identity profile] anibunny.livejournal.com 2009-08-15 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a feeling if we started linking them, then some people are going to start arguing over what is a spoiler and what isn't.

I voted "Don't Care" though. I can see either side. I can usually pass over secrets just fine with the warning the way it is. If a really big popular movie comes out and I don't want to be spoiled, I know to avoid f!s the week or two it comes out.

And I think if you are going to make the spoiler warning more noticeable it should be big, red, sparkle text, AND blinking. ♥ ♥ ♥

I get the feeling that most of the people who are arguing against posting spoilery secrets as links aren't spoilerphobes. Clicking the link = not that hard. Trying to forget the spoiler you just read = impossible.

Yes, there is the note at the top saying 'some secrets may be spoilery'. But seriously, you think that spoilerphobes should just not read fandomsecrets? That's pretty lame.

And I wouldn't expect [livejournal.com profile] technophile to have to analyse every secret that is submitted to work out which ones have spoilers or not. If the secret poster marks it as a spoiler or if it's patently obvious that it's a spoiler, then it should be marked as such.

What about noting at the top of the page, before the cut, which secrets are spoilery and what fandom they're spoilers for? if I know in advance which number secret has a spoiler, it's easy to scroll past it. And it's not like there are that many spoilery secrets posted.

OH AND. I have nothing against people posting spoilery secrets for things which have already screened. If someone is spoiled by fs because they haven't seen the movie/show/etc yet, that's their problem. What bugs me is the spoilers for things which HAVEN'T screened yet.

I don't mind that much, BUT

A side benefit of text links to spoilery secrets is faster loading. And faster loading is my BFF :)

This is true. My computer's pretty fast, already, but I wouldn't complain about it going faster. XD

I have to say all the other suggestions for what to do instead of just leaving things the way they are or linking spoilery secrets sound good.

[identity profile] mlady-rebecca.livejournal.com 2009-08-16 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I never look at the links, so I'd prefer you to just keep the text warnings.

But of the suggestions you listed, moving them all to the end would work. That way people who don't like spoilers can just ignore that whole section.

[identity profile] thatreevesgirl.livejournal.com 2009-08-16 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I really liked the idea of moving them to the end of the post. I wish that would have been a poll choice. I would have voted for that.

[identity profile] thecolourclear.livejournal.com 2009-08-16 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm down with the moving all the spoiler-y secrets to the end.

[identity profile] mirai-gohan.livejournal.com 2009-08-16 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Moving spoilers to the end of the post seems like the best idea. Maybe big red capslock that says HERE THERE BE SPOILERS to alert everyone to scroll past them. Then list the fandom BEFORE the secret instead of after, so people still have the option of looking at some while knowing in advance what they're looking at.

Seems like no one could complain about getting spoiled that way. Not after they've had ample warning.

Shall we make the text blink and sparkle as well?

People need to learn to read. I could see no spoiler!secrets outside of the cut, but really. READ THE TEXT. THEN SCROLL PAST.

I would prefer a different spoiler warning simply because I browse it by paging down. I voted for the links as that seems to make the most sense to me - that way you don't spoil yourself for series you haven't seen - but I'd be happy with them being separated at the bottom too. *shrugs* That's what makes the most sense to me. I know neither is completely fool-proof, but I'd say they're better than what there is now.

[identity profile] blandinavian.livejournal.com 2009-08-16 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't really care all that much, since I keep up to date with the shows I watch that are current. And for the ones I don't currently watch or dead shows that I might want to watch some time in the future, I usually just think that if I go online to sites where TV shows will be discussed, it's my own choice, and I've learned to accept that this means I might get spoiled.

That being said, I kinda get the OP's point, because the warning above the image is sort of pointless, since your eyes will often take in the whole thing at once. So removing them and just sticking to the general spoiler warning would probably work just as well/badly... And as for putting all the spoiler-marked secrets at the bottom, spoilerphobes would still have to scroll past them to get to the comments. An alternative solution that might work better (at least with the spoiler-marked secrets, but I have a feeling people will get spoiled either way because not all spoilery secrets are marked as spoilers) is to make two cuts. One first for the spoilery secrets and then one more below that for the non-spoilery ones. That way, the cut to the non-spoilery ones would mean that you wouldn't have to scroll through the spoilery ones to get to the comments.

I personally like spoilers but I understand how people might want warning. Perhaps making the warning above the cut fandom specific:

ie: "this post contains spoilers for [fandoms]

[identity profile] ladyprophet.livejournal.com 2009-08-16 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
increase space between spoiler warning and secret
Like this suggestion

[identity profile] isisfrog.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
I'd suggest just linking ALL the secrets in the comments, just to prevent double-work. If the mod recognizes the fandom, they could list that as part of the comment link. The pre-cut photo could be something like this: http://i29.tinypic.com/34o3285.jpg If a spoiler-phobe clicks, that's their own problem.

Actually, since it's already warned for before the cut, it's always been their own problem. *shrug* It isn't as if anyone loses limbs or life in this particular game of chance...

You're going to get complaints no matter what - even for a book that came out centuries ago (like the Iliad) - so do whatever you want to do. Seriously. I still laugh over a person that got angry over being "spoiled" for ROTK - despite the movie having been out two years prior, and the book how many decades before that? (Happened on another forum, and LOLarious reactions, 'natch! XD)

[identity profile] kazzisato.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
If people are complaining about spoilers they shouldn't be reading F!S -_-'

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really care either way, but I like the increased space idea. Usually the image isn't as spoilery as the words on it, anyway, and if you scroll quick enough, it doesn't matter. I dunno, though. Since those warnings, I haven't been spoiled by anything I don't want to be spoiled by.

[identity profile] ladililn.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I know most of the votes are for keeping it as it is, but to be honest, I have the same problem as the person who first brought it up--I just don't see the spoiler warning until it's too late; by the time my brain has registered those words my eyes have already moved on. I just read too fast, I guess!

But really, nearly any of those techniques you mentioned would probably work--so it doesn't necessarily have to be linking them.

I'd be down with putting them at the bottom and "spoilers below this point" but people who like to click on the bonus secrets would bitch. Also, I don't usually actually care about spoilers, so my opinion doesn't count for much.

I voted for linking the spoiler pics but it looks like that option's losing. Since I've been spoilt for S5 of SPN twice due to F!S and no warning except the usual one at the beginning of each entry I'd go for moving all spoilery secrets to the end of the post. I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd appreciate that.
