tbh I genuinely don't understand how anyone can claim to be unable to cook in this day and age when you can just go on YouTube and find videos with step-by-step instructions to show you how to make pretty much anything. This isn't the old days where you would actually have to buy cookbooks and rely on them if you wanted to make something.

Because they don't want to learn. My friend can't cook and does not care that they can't cook. They order food delivery every single day.

Mostly they haven't bothered to really try, and for the most part, it's super easy to avoid learning because there's so much convenience food or low-effort preparations that people can get by. I lurk on various cooking subreddits and see a lot of people who have to learn in adulthood and are totally lost, and the main reasons they're having to learn now is:

1) unhealthy diet from eating too much junk food/fast food/processed food and they're no longer teenagers/20-somethings so they're feeling the physical ill effects of a crappy diet

2) Eating out costs too much and they can't afford it anymore

I think most of the time when people say they "can't cook" what they mean is that they lack a foundation of fairly basic cooking knowledge, and would have to look that stuff up in order to have a hope of not botching things.

They may not know how to cook rice or lentils or chickpeas (water:ingredient ratio, how hot, how long, do you season it? do you stir it or leave it alone? etc). They may not know how to season/marinade various meats, or what to put various meats in in order to roast/fry/grill them, or how hot, how long, how to make it not-tough, how to cook it thoroughly enough that it's safe, etc. They may have similar issues with seasoning and cooking vegetables. They may not have a concept of how and when it's appropriate to cook things low and slow, or searingly hot and fast. And so on and so forth.

I say that I can't cook because I HATE cooking. But actually I can do it and do it regularly. Just do not expect me cooking something that takes more than 20 minutes tops. Also I lack some basic preparation knowledge because I forget it and need to look it up every time.
