I'm also mid-thirties, and I thought "based" was our lingo. I've never used it myself, i don’t think, but I used to see it lot like a decade ago with people declaring people based for their actions or words. As in, someone will see a celebrity or a fictional character say something unexpectedly insightful or take a stand for something, and comment "based Mark Hamill" or whatever.

Turns out the usage has shifted, and I just never fully understood the original meaning, so easily went with the flow of the current use.
