They are absolutely not niche.
They are maybe niche for your country but it does not make it true

I don't know how big Reynard is in France, but he's niche everywhere else. And in the UK Mr Punch was always a niche piece of holiday art, and is barely even that now.

Our definition of niche seems to be vastly different. I am from neither of those countries. And I know this characters and they affected theatre and culture in my country too. I consider it pretty damn wide-spread.

Well, you are wrong and in small nerd reference pools.

I am a nerd like most of fandom people. But this characters have been well-known for centuries. Yes, they are lesser known now. But that is a faulty logic! "Oh, modern people don't know them that well, must be because they don't work as characters". No, it's because things change and some characters become less known for one reason or another.

OK, to be fair Robin Hood is better known (thanks to the movies). And our character is probably closer historically to Pulcinella. And! Characters became much more heroic through the 20th century. But I attribute it more to how modern audience see children entertainment. Puppets are for children nowadays. Villainous protagonists are considered more suitable for mature audiences. So villainous Mr Punch, Renard etc get character makeover or become less known not because they are evil trickster characters, but because children media changed. Imho
