Ignoring overzealous 'feminists', I suppose the hate is because it's so popular while being so mediocre. But yeah, I didn't hate it either. There's much worse crap out there.

[identity profile] forthecamera.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
116. The books in themselves are just horrible (in my opinion) but I have friends who like them a lot and they are wonderful people and we both respect each others opinions.

However it seems like its influencing a lot of people, young girls in particular, in a wrong way. There's something about the books that makes too large an amount of people not able to realize all the things that you pointed out in your secret, particularly the part about the dysfunctional relationship. Many people out there see Edward and Bella's relationship as 'true love' and I think thats were most of the issues pop up.

At least for me, and Meyer doesn't seem to realize this either so she only promotes this false idea for impressionable girls that it's okay to completely give up your independence for a guy like Edward.

[identity profile] kitty-wake.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Shitty writing, total lack of acknowledgement that this relationship is fucked up, and it's so god-damned boring. (The plot of the book erased itself from my mind as I read, a bit like I was being wiped by a slowly advancing Manga-Doodle stripe.) That's three very good reasons to hate a book.

Two words: hype backlash. They're mediocre, but there are so many people who ZOMG LUV DEM that it gets annoying.
And then the haters got to be just as annoying, which makes it kind of hype backlash backlash...

A lot of the hate isn't so much against the book as it is the author's and Twihard's overzealous response to the material.

I didn't like it, and I do think it was pretty bad, but I do agree that it's hardly THE WORST BOOK EVER (I'm pretty sure it's not even the worst one I've ever read). It just gets hated on more than whatever other shitty fantasy/romance novel because it's so popular.

(Anonymous) 2009-08-17 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
There's nothing wrong with you. It's the people that think that they're relationship is perfect and that SMeyer is better than people like JK Rowling or Steven King that piss everyone off and have something wrong with them. I read them, and they were cheesey teen romance novels to me. I understood the complaints, and some of the shit that happens in them really makes me cringe, but they're still pretty harmless. It's the obnoxious fans that I have a problem with.

Why the hate?

The twitards, the stalking creepiness, the emotional and physical abuse, the imprinting, the sparkly vampires, the HORRIBLE writing, the fact that there is NO PLOT.

Stephanie Meyer is sending the message to girls that you should live for your man. That sex before marriage is bad but once you do get married you can have all the sex you want as long as it brings a child into the world.

And WTF is this shit about Edward being a virgin? What is he like, 130? And they all go to high school? It's just...too horrible. I can't even deal with it.

When I ask fans why they enjoy the books the answer is usually "Because Edward's so hot!" or "It's so romantic, you just don't understand! FUCK YOU HATERR."

I also wonder about that. Yes, Twilight sucks, but there's worse stuff out there. Mocking I can understand, hype backlash I can understand, but that seething hatred coming from some people... it's weird.

[identity profile] t-aspera.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think hating Twilight now has a status symbol type effect, so it will just keep snowballing. I think hatedoms in general are pathetic, but I guess everyone has their passions?

[identity profile] canthari.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's bad, but as far as romance novels go, I've read much worse

Why the hate guys?"

You can tell me about another book as bad but with a such Hype as Twilight had?. That's why everyone is hating it I guess.

BTW, I don't hate it either, but I don't like it and the anti-fandom is pretty lolarious.

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Having read Twilight myself, I think it is the fact that it is so MASSIVELY popular that really get people's grills fired up. There have most certainly been WORSE romance novels before it, I can imagine that, but it is just so BORING. After some chapters I almost find myself gasping desperately for air because the book sucked all the fun and simultaneously, oxygen out of the room. It stole my breath away alright, by holding a knife fashioned from pure doldrums to my throat. I expected epic flouncing, and only received bleak characters in bleak situations. Literally.

Ahem. My own need to complain aside, my point was that while it is such a boring book it has become SO POPULAR. The fans hype it to high heaven, and thus the anti-fans raise their voices in order to be heard, getting more and more irate for each passing moment. Louder voices are met with louder voices, and before we know it Mutually Assured Wank-struction happens. Or Critical Wank-Mass is reached, I should perhaps say.

From the things a lot of the overzealous anti-Twilighters say, I keep getting the impression that people aren't nearly as upset by the fact that the books suck so hard, and are more offended by the fact that books that suck so hard are so goddamn popular. So I agree that for the most part, it probably is just a "hype backlash" thing.

Personally, there are too many things in there that MAKE ZERO SENSE OKAY, and personally, I dislike Bella a lot more than I do Edward and think most of the complaints people make about him are... odd, given the context of the story. I don't care much one way or the other, though; it just means I couldn't get very far through the first book, because I can't stand reading a story where I dislike the viewpoint character. If other people like it, I'm glad they've found something to enjoy, honestly. As long as they're not being dumbasses about it, and that's just general dumbassery I have a low tolerance for, not Twilight in particular.

[identity profile] mochalatt3.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
the amount of hatred something receives is directly related to how popular it is- twilight is massively popular therefore everyone is required to hate it with the burning passion of a thousand suns

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoy Twilight (the book, not the series) for what it is: a crappy, high school beach read with one or two fantasy elements. I did not enjoy the last three (well, I only read the last 2.005, but you get the idea) because they started trying to be epic fantasy. No. Just, no.

[identity profile] dwinghy.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
As others have said, it's mainly because of the series' popularity. I also think a lot of people don't actually give a shit but pretend at TWILIGHT RAEG as a bandwagon thing.

I also wonder how many people who go on about how UNHEALTHY OMG Edward and Bella's relationship is are the same people who yell DON'T JUDGE, JUDGEY McJUDGERSON when shota/loli/incest fanfic is brought up in a negative light. As if enjoying unhealthy fictional relationships is OK as long as it's not Twilight.

[identity profile] muffinman-owns.livejournal.com 2009-08-17 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy crap THIS.

OP is win.

[identity profile] erised-mirror.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Have you read the sequels? Because if I had to choose, Twilight would be my favourite from the bunch. The series gets worse with each book, when you reach the last, the hate just explodes and you shove all books into the same 'this is shit' bag.

I thought the first chapter was interesting, and only that. It had potential, but it got boring.

It's like Sue fic to me. The author even claims she had no creative writing experience. She uses words incorrectly. The plot is mediocre, and most of the characters are one-dimensional.

I absolutely LOVE making fun of it though. I love watching/reading parodies. My hate just makes it fun. =)

Kinda sorta tempted to compare it to the furry fandom.
It's not the subject itself that is so hate worthy as the masses of stupid being loud about it.
A anthropomorphic animal vs a moron screaming about how you're all oppressive Nazis for not loving it.
compares fairly well to
A cliché vampire romance of questionable quality vs an imbecile hoard of fans who scream at you extensively about how you have no taste in literature/are an idiot whore/are jealous/so forth if you so much as imply it is not the best thing ever.

[identity profile] sugarsurge.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Twilight entertained me, I've read worse novels and even though it's not the fucking Jesus Christ of romance, it's still decent. People who get obsessed with it annoy the fuck out of me though. Especially the one's who share a room with me and are looking over my shoulder while I type. D<

[identity profile] flyingcharr.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't understand why books like that become bestsellers in the first place. This and Eragon were terrible books. The authors can barely write, it's really frustrating to me that this is the kind of tripe people happily lap up nowadays. Sure there have been worse, but there are so many other much richer, BETTER books out there that deserve to be bestsellers and are mostly ignored or worse go out of print. :/

[identity profile] wicked-seraph.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Hm.

I used to enjoy Twilight, but one day I sort of 'snapped awake' and realised that it... lacks, to put it mildly. I'd felt that way for most of the series, but it took a little longer for all the pieces of the fail puzzle to fall into place.

That being said: while I can understand disliking it, I don't understand the arrogant haters who personally insult fans of the series. If you don't like it, ignore it, FFS. :/

(Anonymous) 2009-08-18 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
I hated it more than I otherwise would have because it was so fun/hilarious to hate on. Does that make sense?
