I just think most Youtuber merch is really fucking ugly so I've never wanted to buy it. There might be some out there who can design a nice looking shirt or something, but for the most part it's just their channel name/logo slapped on a shirt and it looks hideous or really awkward out of context.

This. Sometimes I take a look at someone's merch out of curiosity and think... nah. Like that's a lot of money for something that, on a design level, I would not pay $2 for at Goodwill.

I don’t follow any YouTubers but my husband is a major fan of two channels. I subscribed to both to help their numbers and just today was encouraging my husband to buy merch from one LOL But it’s not like Mr Beast bars or an ugly t shirt, it’s Townsend’s which was a shop before it was a YouTube channel. He loves James Townsend so I think it would be cool if he got something from their store. We don’t have any use for reenactment stuff but I think they sell like spices and stuff, too.

Honestly... Good point. The last time I was a fan of a Youtuber he shot himself in the foot and turned out to be a weirdo, which made me glad I didn't buy a t-shirt T_T A lot of Youtuber merch is just boring too.

Or somebody who thinks their taxes shouldn't go to social programs because the money helps people who don't work hard enough. Could they accidentally support a bad person? Sure. But while they are girding their loins against the possibility of giving away money to the wrong people, they're also not helping any of their faves, who most likely aren't creeps, and making excuses about it.

We all make our purchasing choices differently, I see why this is a secret.

Because in general, I think most people are decent but flawed. Being a public figure, you're more suseptible to having your flaws be seen and picked apart.
However, we live in a world where no one owes these public figures time and patience to be flawed.

I personally have bought a content creator's stuff (a couple pins and a hat), they were thoroughly canceled on Twitter and have gone a bit less public in recent years. I felt they'd been unfairly treated by the Twitter mob, but I hate people getting all righteous and amped up over something insignificant (this person did not harm anyone or do anything illegal/malicious), so I don't talk about this person to people anymore.

I get why OP wouldn't want to buy any YT creator's stuff, even if people think OP is being unfairly cautious.
