it suuuuuper depends on the fandom (and luck with having decent moderation. you know, like we used to say about forums, then LJ...). some fandom subs are nothing but porn and shitposting and any legitimate discussion gets buried. other fandom subs will absolutely shut down the shitposting and discussion is wonderful. then you get something that accidentally makes it to /all and now you're snowed under a bunch of shitposters that think your sub is like their sub.

the amount of work it takes to curate your space can pay off, or it cannot, and there's no litmus test before trying. you just have to go in and try. personally? it was not worth it for me. I've left all my fandomm subs and only follow 20 cat subs now.
