That’s a big problem with modern media. So many don’t have a target audience so they don’t make something that specific groups would like. I still laugh at the Netflix Witcher show because they had an audience of millions before they even started but they decided not to make the show they promoted because it would be too niche. They lost their star, their audience was less than half of what was projected and has long since shrunk, and they’re competing against larger, more successful franchises. But if they’d made the show they originally pitched and promoted, they’d have an audience four times the size of the one they have now. Probably not large enough to justify the production costs but it wouldn’t be nearly as big a loss.

Damn, 'The Witcher' is such an excellent example of this phenomenon. And the thing is that the first season wasn't bad -- it was rooted in the original IP, told its story in an interesting way, and had a couple of great ending hooks. But they went and completely fucked it up! Second season, they were clearly trying to make things look the part, but looks were all that was there.

Thinking about it, though, I'm not sure it's about having a target audience as about wanting people to "eat their vegetables." You shouldn't watch this for Geralt; you should watch it for Yennifer and Ciri. Geralt is there to facilitate their journeys as powerful women. Which, look, I'm down for powerful women on narrative journeys, but sometimes the main character is a man, and sometimes, that's what people want to see.

Kinda digressing from your point (and agreeing?): Yennefer's pretty awesome. But that anyone should watch the Witcher for Ciri is laughable and if the execs are really pushing that angle, wow. Ciri is a bland, unoriginal copy of a character type that's been done a million times before in a million better ways. Maybe she's a good version of that type in the books (I haven't read them, know little about them) but definitely not on the show. Sure you can say the same for (show) Geralt, but don't claim Ciri's different.
