Humbug. When I first came on the web, I'd have killed for any fandom to have that many fics. We were lucky to get even a tenth of that, and fewer of them were actually good ones worth reading. Most of them were low grade masturbatory trash. You don't know you're born. [uphill both ways, sheer luxury, etc]

despite being a genxer who lived through the satanic panic, I don't D&D. I don't understand D&D. I thought the movie was nice but the only part that grabbed me was the glorious cameo of the group in the OG costumes from the 80s cartoon, that was delightful.

I have since watched my housemate play Baldur's Gate excessively. watching the movie after that, I finally caught all the references and grasped that this was one movie set in a sprawling worldbuild and literally everything was a nod to actual D&D players...not to me, a casual fantasy enjoyer. Understanding the references just made the rest of the movie fall apart. it had some charmingish moments but in the end it's paper-thin and there's nothing about the characters worth writing fic for. I can't even imagine someone using the characters for their own campaign, they're that boring.

Most movies (especially one-shot movies) don't really get big, long-lasting fandoms.

It was a fun movie though and I'm glad it has the fic that it does.

Nah, that IS super active for this kind of movie. If you browse "movies" on AO3, vast majority of them have less than 10 fics. The ones with fics in hundreds are generally part of a franchise, adaptations of something already popular, or both. A few one-shot movies will manage to capture enough of an audience that they'll get a steady flow of fanworks for a period of time before fading away. This movie came out long enough ago that the engagement has slowed to a crawl by now, but close to 900 fics is still impressive.
Also, there's a good chance of the fandom getting revived with the second movie being in works.

I'm the polar opposite. Imagining being one of few or god forbid the only Special in a universe, especially if it's only because of being Born Different and all about what-you-are or who/what-birthed-you instead of who-you-are or what-you-do, is actively discomforting to me.

Didn’t they have to reshoot the finale because Paramount pulled the rug on the show in post production? DISCO isn’t my jam so maybe I’m wrong but I would think a surprise cancellation after shooting the season would mess with the arc trajectory, like they’d be scrambling to try to tack the conclusion on without the benefit of time, money, or planning.

Had already watched the movies forever ago, but recently decided to actually get into Star Wars, and... yeah, I'm having fun, but most of what I've seen makes me not want to touch the community around it. People are just so ravenous about the new part of the franchise.

Agreed. I was the anon who complained about the same thing in the GC recently. I just much preferred the more anonymous approach. It's nice that this is apparently working for them so far but I don't enjoy watching the videos as much anymore. (Also, I loved the bentos and since her husband doesn't work anymore, they're mostly gone as well.)

I don't mind the Modern Era referencing the Classic Series as such but then you get things like the last finale. The TARDIS being "seduced" by another force - WOW that's BAD, and that force is Sutekh and "finally after 50 of our years we get to see how his plan would've panned out and how would The Doctor counter it?" and...neither of those things were really referenced or concluded satisfactorily.

So I get the frustration.

If Discovery killed Star Trek, then Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks brought it back to life again.

I agree that Discovery is neither good Star Trek nor particularly good Television. It is poorly lit, the characters are underserved by the writing, the lead actor appears to have at most two facial expressions, and those damn overhead crane shots where it looks the cameraman is doing a slowmotion back flip over the set are really bloody distracting.
