Controversy is generally going to arise over any long-running and/or beloved property. It's going to happen over any blockbuster. It's going to happen over anything that touches geek/nerd-dom.

If there's something wrong with casting black actors in a show that is likely to cause controversy, then the logical conclusion to be drawn is that black actors should not be cast in any long-running, beloved, popular, or nerdy show -- which is not particularly good or useful.

You could stop blackwashing existing white characters and introduce good POC characters. And don't cast actors who keep shouting about how they hate white people or this show isn't for white/straight men or how they're better than icky mediocre white people or telling people to go and touch grass instead of watching.

Except you people who say "blackwashing" don't really want original POC characters either. "Make a new character" is your cover for "I don't want black people in my shows" and you never acknowledge the possibility that new POC characters can exist alongside recast classics.

P.S. in regards to Doctor Who, you realize that making new POC characters is something they have already been doing for a long time, yes? Every companion is a new character. There was never a white Martha, Bill, Yaz, Mickey...

I don't think it's great for people to go around saying, "this isn't for people of a certain race/gender/sexual orientation, and also I hate those people" either. You don't end prejudice by flipping the subject of it.

But as far as introducing "good POC characters" goes, what counts as a "good" character is somewhat subjective; and it is the case that a lot of viewers set the bar much higher for POC. Deigning to cast POC unless and until someone has written the perfect character that will please everyone is a recipe for never casting POC at all.
