Does nobody do rec lists anymore?

(Anonymous) 2024-07-08 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I just started a tiktok just to do rec lists for "older" fandoms, lol.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-08 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That's awesome, but the problem is how to find rec lists on sites like tumblr (notoriously impossible to search or google) and on Tiktok, people don't want to listen to a video listing a bunch of recs, (or as least, I certainly don't and none of my friends would, either. We are reading fic during down times at school or work and can't have that tiktok noise.

A rec list is a list in text with links, that can itself be saved/bookmarked.

We probably need another solution. I don't know if people are allowed to make a list like that on AO3 vs. just favoriting things or making a tag or adding them to collections. Maybe promote your collection on Tiktok?

Just google rec lists for whatever pairing you want. Or use collections on Ao3.

Collections don't work if the author doesn't give permission for the recommender to add their work to their recommendation collection.

And due to abuse of collections to hide works, a lot fewer authors are allowing that permission.

(1. Be a jerk. 2. Add works that you don't like to a collection. 3. Set the collection as Unrevealed. 4. Marinate in your horribleness while works that other people like are removed from their grasp.)

That is still a thing?

(Anonymous) 2024-07-09 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
This isn't a thing anymore. It got fixed.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-09 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
The only thing that got fixed is that all collection add requests have to be accepted by the work author first before the work is actually added. Before, it was possible to add someone's work to a collection and (depending on the user's settings) it would just be added, so someone could do that unilaterally while you were sleeping/not checking AO3. They could do it repeatedly until you turned off the auto-accept option.

But it still means that an author can accept their work being added to what seems like a sincere recs collection with nothing odd about the settings, and then the creator of that collection can later set all items in the collection to unrevealed. In any case, the author can simply remove their work from the collection again in order to reveal it (that hasn't changed), and can now block the user who did that. But the fact that ALL collections have this unreveal (and also: anonymize) functionality means that authors are unlikely to accept their work being added to some rando's faves collection.

Also, because of the switch to requiring that ALL collection add requests have to be accepted by the author, if an author has abandoned their AO3 account, you can no longer add their works to collections at all, which makes collections as a way to do rec lists no longer really viable...

Yeah, a few jerks ruin things for fandom again. I love browsing recommendation collections on Ao3!

Apparently you're supposed to make a bookmark and add the bookmark to a collection, which seems to be too complex for most users to get the hang of.

I don't think it's all that intuitive to make a bookmark and adding the bookmark to the collection. If you're going to bookmark, might as well use something like Pinboard so you can tag all your bookmarks and search them. Having said that more people are using Ao3 than Pinboard.

I think is part of the problem. I also don't want to watch a video of someone talking about rec lists. I want to read and scroll and skim and click on ones that seem interesting, then leave a comment. But there are clearly a lot of fans that want none of that and just want short videos.

I have rec lists on DW and Pinboard. However, it's not quite the same as goodreads because it's a one way communication. I post recs...sometime people say thinks, Goodreads had people commenting on what they thought about the story...Good and bad. It has a different vibe.
