This is what LiveJournal used to be. A place to share fandom things you loved with other fans, either via your own journal and friendslist and/or with communities. I don't really understand why modern fandom spaces can't be the same, but I imagine because it's too spread out so people either can't find the recs or feel as though they are screaming into the void. Fandom outgrew itself.

It seems to be fandom by fandom. Equestria Daily did (does?) recs, and I think there’s one for Steven Universe somewhere.

Actually, Dreamwidth would work really well for this if you could get enough people.

If they want to share it, recs are a thing that can and do happen. Recs are born of a place of "Hey! I liked this thing! If you're in this fandom and like these elements of the fic, you'll probably like it too!" which is fun and exciting.

Why do you think that fan spaces refer to "comments" and "recs" on fic and art and not "reviews"? Because no one should be reviewing a piece of amateur work done purely for love and fun. People who insist that they need to write a review to share their views on a fanfic have such a significant overlap with people who say "I'm brutally honest" when what they mean is, they want to be a bully while hiding behind a technically neutral term that it is not at all neutral in practice.

All the biggest fandoms have a fic subreddit. And there is the fanfic subreddit which allows requests.

Storygraph allows "not a book" entries, and hides reviews on "not a book" entries from everyone but their writer, iirc.

Things that reading-tracking sites do that rec lists don't do:
1. Keep a running count of your reading by volume (pages per week, books per year, etc) -- possible to do manually but a pain; doesn't have to be social.
2. Keep track of the sorts of things you have been reading, by genres and themes and other categories -- also possible to do manually but even more of a pain; doesn't have to be social.
3. A place where you can write a note to yourself about the thing that you read, which doesn't have to meet any sort of fit-for-public-consumption criteria (like positivity or fairness). Doesn't have to be social, and in some cases it's best if it's not.
I started reading so early that I don't remember learning to read or looking at text in English that was completely unreadable to me. If I read it more than five years ago and it wasn't SUPER memorable, it may fall straight out of the bottom of my mind and I may read it again like it was the first time and only discover that I have been here before when I find that I've already left kudos.
4. A place where you can read or leave warnings that the author may not have added, or that may be spoilers. Kind of has to be social.
5. A place where you can meet others with no pre-existing connection except that you've enjoyed the same work (and use the same service to track that). This is duplicated by comments on a work, when the author allows them. Inherently social.

Huh, yeah, you're absolutely right. I was in a fandom book club once, and it was great. I'd kill for a similar book club in all my fandoms, but it absolutely could not exist on tumblr.

It probably could exist on reddit, but I think reddit is too much of a wild west. It would be way too easy for people to come in and be assholes.

Is GoodReads!Anon sponsored? Does she own Amazon stock?!? Why do we keep having these posts?

I think most fic writers aren't really looking to be rated 1-5 stars on something they do for a hobby. Recs and book clubs are one thing, goodreads is a whole different thing.
