This is what LiveJournal used to be. A place to share fandom things you loved with other fans, either via your own journal and friendslist and/or with communities. I don't really understand why modern fandom spaces can't be the same, but I imagine because it's too spread out so people either can't find the recs or feel as though they are screaming into the void. Fandom outgrew itself.

I was coming to mention Livejournal. I miss those days.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-08 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I miss them too. LJ was my favorite phase of fandom interaction and the last time I was really in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-09 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
NA - Honestly, same.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-08 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
mte. Pity DW never took off.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-08 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I made the move to DW when Russia bought LJ and they changed it to look more like Facebook and I have forever been sad that most of fandom didn't move with me but instead opted for tumblr. I don't have a DW anymore (well, technically I do but hell if I can remember the log in info at this point) but I still hope for a sort of nostalgia reawakening and fandom moving back to the journal/smaller community style.

But I'm also so out of the habit of writing and journaling, I wonder if I would be able to really get back in the habit.

AYRT
I had the same experience. I actually did make a new account this year but only did one entry. I meant to do more but after running into walls trying to make my journal look the way I wanted, I just kinda drifted off again. I should really get back to it though!

(Anonymous) 2024-07-08 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think for me, the journaling was really a community activity. Like I liked sharing things because I had a friend circle that would comment and share their own things. I'm not good at just journaling for myself, apparently. You are making me think of giving it another try though! Just gotta think of a username...

(Anonymous) 2024-07-09 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
[DA] Yeah, I use my DW a few times a month (mostly for life updates and meta about media I've been consuming) and checking my reading page several times a week, but it's just not the same as having a friend circle on LJ who were all in it too. It was easier to find new friends, too. Then everyone moved to Tumblr. :/

(Anonymous) 2024-07-09 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
DA. Same. Keeping journal just for myself such a sad affair. Ironically after LJ thing we had a place for journaling and having fan community for a much longer time. (Ironically because I am Russian). But it went to shit anyway too. And now people are more scared to make fandom posts anyway

(Anonymous) 2024-07-09 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
(NTA) Ugh, yeah. I've had my DW for over a decade and I've gone through spurts where I posted on it, but it just makes me sad how lonely it feels. Even though I do have some mutual subscriptions via friending memes, it feels identical to having impersonal Twitter mutuals and not the actual friends on LJ because the culture changed so much.

>And now people are more scared to make fandom posts anyway
I'm not even into a lot of the DW popular fandoms, so I hesitate to just post my headcanons or opinions because it's pointless. But then I wonder if that's part of the problem, if someone searches XYZ and finds nothing they're less likely to talk about it on their own journal. But when I post it's *crickets chirping*

(Anonymous) 2024-07-09 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT
Yes! Not having friends to interact is just so lonely. So I don't see the point.
Tbf I had a good time on twitter for a long time. Had a friend group and everything. Even mad discourse wasn't bad it was occasionally fun. Now I don't go there at all. *sighs

Well, ah, for us not making fandom posts is not about fandom changes but more about not being arrested for terrorism (lol) or harrased for daring to have some fun :'D

(Anonymous) 2024-07-09 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
(AYRT) My time on Twitter has been crap, which is why I deleted. Even when I only follow 30+ people or avoid discourse the circles turned toxic just like on Tumblr. I was a bit too young to use LJ for more than a year (forums were my main fandom experience) but damn, I miss that format now.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-09 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
That sucks!
I am old enough to have LJ experience, it was good, ngl. And I had a group of fandom friends that somehow ended on twitter.
I had my share of drama and falling out but I am both offline and/or online friend with a lot of fandom people. But we had a site similar to LJ that lasted through LJ days to late 10s. I can't say that my tumblr experience is bad though, so my standarts are probably really lax.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-09 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
What gets me is I know tons of people who used LJ in its peak and bemoan how Xitter and Tumblr is worse, but they... stay there. When I had a social media exile I started using my DW more, but no one in my group followed despite telling them that DW is still kicking and has better features. Bleh.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-09 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
That's the frustrating thing! They were complaining about tumblr as they all moved to tumblr and now they do it with every other site they hate but move to.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-09 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
"Go back to DW" is the answer to so many modern fandom problems!

"I hate algorithims" DW doesn't have one, we find each other via posts and interests.
"I hate how fast paced social media is" I've taken weeks to respond to messages in my inbox, and people don't mind.
"I hate how discussions can break containment" DW has no "reblog" function. You can link to posts, but that's not quite the same.
"I hate how the character limit on Twitter kills any nuance in discussion" Your takes can be as long as they want on DW, and the lack of reblogs gets rid of the "breaking containment" problem.
"I want privacy" You can have an access-only list.
"I want to have more than one PFP instead of cycling through them" DW has icons, and you can pay to have more.
"I want a specific community for [fandom/ship/kink/etc.] instead of trawling through Twitter/Tumblr for likeminded people" We can make communities.

And yet, only one friend has joined and they don't use it much due to IRL stuff (and aren't really the fannish type).

We are one in our frustrations!

(Anonymous) 2024-07-09 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
So well said!

(Anonymous) 2024-07-10 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
LJ was great. Fandom interactions were easy and common, allowing for real growth of a community, and I got probably 3-4x as many comments on fic as I do on AO3. And yes, also great for recs/reviews of fic. I miss it.
