Re: Why

If they do and other caffeinated drinks don’t, you’re probably allergic to something in them. Some people are allergic to taurine and others are allergic to mammal byproducts. Or it could be something else in them. Regardless, energy drinks are about the worst thing you can drink that isn’t fast acting poison.

Actually, this isn't really true. They have less caffeine in them than the average grande coffee, and there's no evidence that taurine, consumed in moderation, is bad for you. In fact, studies indicate that the most unhealthy thing about energy drinks (so long as you do not exceed recommended daily consumption) is the excessive sugar content, or alternatively, the artificial sweetener in the sugar-free versions. I.e. the same thing that makes all sweetened soda beverages bad for you.

In short, energy drinks certainly aren't good for you, but unless you are exceeding the RDA, or have a medical condition that makes you intolerant of caffeine, they most likely aren't worse for you than drinking the same daily volume in cola.

I think maybe you replied to the wrong comment? I didn’t say it was the caffeine unless other caffeinated drinks are a problem in which case OP likely has a caffeine sensitivity. The comment above mine is the one that asserts that it’s the caffeine.

And taurine: many people are allergic to it. Which is what I said. I didn’t say taurine was bad for you. Although for many brands the amount of taurine in one is over the daily limit, which is part of why energy drinks are so bad for you.

As for the poison remark, that’s more to do with the colorings and preservatives. Soda is bad, energy drinks are worse. No one should drink either but it’s their choice.

Energy drinks have a lot more actual ingredients than soda so it’s possible OP is allergic to something that isn’t even listed since “natural flavors” can be 1 or 1500 things that the manufacturer isn’t required to disclose. There’s literally no way to know what is in them or what was used to process them. And literal poison is actually used to process a lot of ingredients. For anyone with a compromised immune system, the trace amounts of processing materials can endanger or even kill them.
