Lots of straight ships aren't even canon so I don't see why gay ships should be singled out.

It especially infuriates me when they pull the "yaoi/slash shippers devalue the sanctity of friendship because they see signs of friendship as romance" argument.

Especially since those same people using the argument suddenly don't give a shit about the sanctity of friendship when two characters of the opposite sex are shipped together despite being just friends in canon

This is actually my biggest pet peeve. I get really mad when people smash two opposite-sex characters together just because one is a boy and one is a girl even when canon makes it explicitly clear that there is nothing romantic between them. But somehow I'm supposed to be okay with that just because it's straight?

Did a time traveler from 2008 post this? I don't like het ships either but LJ/dA was so long ago to still hold a grudge over drama back then. Most of the anti-yaoi types there grew out of it.

Whoa, what a blast from the past. I use to go to the yaoi/yuri/slash groups on DA back in the 2000s as a teen, because at least it had guaranteed more of a queer friendly online space compared to the 'main' fandoms.

It was a little funny to see anti-yaoi people throw tantrums because 'How dare you make everything gay! Why does it have to be gay???' They were usually the same lot that would sulk about the gays stealing the rainbow and tried to reclaim it back. Oh the online dramas that were had.

I was always a big multishipper of m/m, m/f, and f/f, it always sucked that I never felt at home at any community because all hated each other, so I would get in one community just to see a ship I liked being bashed. The whole "Anti-Yaoi" thing always sucked ass thought.

Same, and it still feels there's a lot of friction on all the sides.

Though I ship a bit more f/f then m/m, and back in my devart and LJ days, I would go to the m/m communities only see lot more mask off misogyny and virulent hatred and contempt of my female faves so that is marginally better now I guess.

tbh i think you've probs taken it all a bit too seriously. homophobia IS a serious issue of course but i think the way fandom has shifted and changed over the years shows that overall people are doing their best to be better people

I do agree that the bulk of the fandom has shifted massively since the 90s in that same-sex pairings are now pretty much treated as normal and regular, which is nice, but the people who were flaming homophobes then are still flaming homophobes now. They're fewer in number but that just makes it a bigger shock when you run across them. My current fandom had a big flare-up of judgemental Christians last year.

People have recently started an anti-BL war because they think yuri is not treated as well so this makes a lot of them hurry to find reasons why shipping is bad when it does not involve female characters. People, especially kids are not trying to be better, in fact they have fallen back to homophobia, just through a different pipeline.
