Depends extremely on the gin. Gin is actually an especially bad example because there are so many different variations what it can taste like in addition to general difference based on quality. Tequila kind of tastes similar at it's base, with mainly quality making a difference.

It's one of those liquors like vodka that's only any good in a mixed drink, if that helps.

I don't drink liquor so, I've never had it either. But plenty of people drink it around here, so I can tell you it smells strong and kind of like paint thinner to me. It's made of blue agave and is supposed to be sweet, fruity, and earthy, but I can't say I've ever heard anyone describe it with just those three words.
