I don't understand why I'm expected to at once advocate for the liberation of women but also watch a movie about men paying for their brides and not only reserve judgment, but treat it as a celebration of diversity.

What's that fucking quote about the paradox of tolerance again? Why do I have to be okay with people in different cultures treating women, queer people, and other races/ethnicities absolutely abominably simply because they belong to different cultures? Oh, blah blah, social construction, blah blah cultural relativism. If there isn't an actual, universal moral reason not to treat women like chattel; if it's all just "relative;" then there's not really any good reason why Western conservatives can't push for it to be so, is there? JFC.

I feel like there is one anon around here who lives in a reality just slightly out of step with ours. Like tar season anon, but without any cabbages.

Their remarks make sense in their world, but over here they are such head scratchers.

I don't know what movie they're talking about but I feel kinda similar about some issues, especially with certain religious groups, where a lot of criticism gets dismissed with the ~but it's their culture~ argument, even when that culture is highly misogynistic/queerphobic/racist etc.

Is that the case though? I feel like cultural differences might be named as explanations, but not as an excuse. I'm not sure which religions you're talking about were the criticism gets dismissed so easily.

For example, when the FIFA world cup was held in Qatar, there were a lot of discussions and criticism of the homophobia, misogyny and racism in the country. Same with the winter Olympics in China.

DA but I see it often as well. Mostly with religious ties - lots of misogynistic and queerphobic religions out there that I'm told I have to respect because its their culture.

Try criticizing Islam in a progressive space and see what happens.

You and I must be in different progressive spaces. The problems with specifically misogyny but also homophobia in Islam are often brought up where I am.
