Imagine if every single reader of people's fic left an honest comment? And it was just endless spam of "meh it was alright, not too great though, trope-y and predictable, skip unless bored, 2/5"?

The authors desperate for validation would be immediately screaming for it to stop

ayrt

I was actually thinking about that because some of my very honest comments would be along the lines of "Kind of an interesting premise, but your characterization is all over the place - have you actually watched the show? You started the scene with the characters in a car, but then they were suddenly in an apartment, and you need to fix that. You mean 'discreet' not 'discrete', they are trying to be circumspect not distinct; you mean 'fazed' not 'phased', they are disturbed not going through a staged process, and you mean 'warily' not 'wearily', they are suspicious not tired. And your resolution is rushed. You could do this a lot better."

I would kill for that kind of feedback, no lie!

These days that would be considered toxic and hateful I'm afraid; only sucking the author's metaphorical dick is acceptable, otherwise GTFO and STFU.

An honest comment? Sure. But helpful or insightful? No.

"Feed your authors comments" doesn't specify.

I bet more people would feel differently about it if authors specifically felt entitled to praise, though.
