(Anonymous) 2024-07-27 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)But in fic, if the character doesn't canonically use weed, I'm annoyed by too much of that in the story. Greg from Succession is canonically a pothead, and there are several other characters that like/use recreational drugs, so that's fine. Castiel in the alternate hippie timeline uses drugs, fine. I CAN see some casual pot smoking in various college AUs for different properties, but if someone doesn't canonically do drugs, I just get the impression the fic writer wants them to smoke because THEY do. Which is just as annoying as the characters playing Mario Kart or (insert other thing) all the time because THEY do.

(Anonymous) 2024-07-28 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)This is so true. I suspect that a solid 95% of the people who write weed use into their fics, when the character is never established as toking IRL, are people who toke themselves. I think most of the time they write it in because they find it relatable, as much as anything.
Also, I realized when this same topic came up several years ago, that a big part of my issue with my blorbos using weed is that the way most people write weed use into the fic doesn't actually serve any narrative purpose beyond "I want a scene where my fave tokes and relaxes with friends" or something. When characters drink, it usually serves a narrative purpose, whether it be that they do/say something revealing, or that the drinking is an indicator of their troubled mental/emotional state, etc. Almost all other drug use is similarly a function of the narrative in some way.
Weed is the only drug I can think of that is usually, the vast majority of the time, not serving any purpose within the narrative, beyond "something for the characters to be doing during a social scene." Which is fine, if the character is established in canon as being a casual toker. In that case they can toke in a scene the way John Watson makes tea, or Tony Stark tinkers in the lab. But if they aren't established as toking in canon, then for people who don't see toking as a default behavior, it can ping a little jarring when the character sparks up for no narrative purpose whatsoever.
