In principle, I'm down with legalization and recreational pot usage. In real life, sometimes people who smoke pot make it their identity in a very tedious, annoying way. Low-key bragging about how much they smoke, how it affects them, etc. because they think it's a cool lifestyle thing. So instead of a person who smokes pot, now they're an annoying pothead type.

Sort of like how a woman can have a son without being a #boymom or a person can be sensitive without telling everyone they're an "empath".

Yup. Totally agree. I have no issues with it being legal. I'm cool with people who casually use it, I see it as no different than drinking. But addiction can be a thing, overuse can be a thing, and please don't make it your whole identity. When it interferes with the rest of your life, it is a problem.

And also, it shows up sometimes in fics about characters who just wouldn't use it. And that's annoying.

I can totally get this, especially if it’s turned into their whole identity. OTOH you’d be amazed how many people are like that behind closed doors even if it’s still illegal in their country. Also, America isn’t the only place that has legalization. There are places with actual legalization, not the smattering of levels of decriminalization or legalization across the US.

Yeah lmao "backbuttoning" out of stories with "casual weed use, especially when the canon media isn't American" is a very funny snit to have for people like me from a country with full legalization where your grandma probably casually tokes.

Right with you. There are characters I could see smoking weed, but a lot of the time the fics that go there depict it in very OOC ways.

Yeah, I don't get it. Though I did move to PNW long before pot was legalized, so I just assumed our reaction would be the same as everyone's and... apparently not?

Heck, I'm not even in the PNW (I live in another part of the US where weed is legal) and I'm laughing at the idea that only college students smoke pot because around here, smoking pot is considered perfectly normal among people of all ages. Most of the people I know who do it are actually 30+.

I'm a habitual weed smoker in a legal state and I agree, generally. Like, if it's in the background or casually mentioned, sure! But sometimes I'm like "your enthusiasm for weed is messing up the characterization of this fic, please be more thoughtful and less cringy about it" lol.

I guess? I've seen a few where it's like - okay, (character)'s only hobby in this fic is clearly weed and that's boring for me, so bye bye! And maybe a couple (at most) of long, drawn out descriptions of rolling the joint sexily that I've thought were ew.

But it's something people do! So in a modern canon or AU fic it's fine as far as I'm concerned, depending on how likely I think it is for that particular character in general.

Not American seems like too big a generalization. Some places have less restrictions on weed, some places with more legal restrictions still have a big weed subculture. Then again some places weed has a much bigger stigma and is considered a more "hard" drug. I agree with you about when weed in a fic feels out of place for the setting, or is characterized like... in a very casual way, when the setting and character in question would suggest they'd think of it as a serious drug and have trouble getting it or something.

Eh, I'm not American and weed is technically illegal where I am, but in certain places it's completely normal. I used to work in a law firm where one of the lawyers was the main distributor of weed. He apparently gets it from his cousin. Smoking pot was completely normal at team events or after-work get togethers, both in private and in public.

I have no particular opinions about weed use (it's not my favorite, but if I happened to have some today, I'd smoke it.)

But in fic, if the character doesn't canonically use weed, I'm annoyed by too much of that in the story. Greg from Succession is canonically a pothead, and there are several other characters that like/use recreational drugs, so that's fine. Castiel in the alternate hippie timeline uses drugs, fine. I CAN see some casual pot smoking in various college AUs for different properties, but if someone doesn't canonically do drugs, I just get the impression the fic writer wants them to smoke because THEY do. Which is just as annoying as the characters playing Mario Kart or (insert other thing) all the time because THEY do.

I just hate characters smoking weed, especially characters I like, because all pot heads I've known were tedious, annoying people and I've had incredibly bad experiences in my family with it.

I agree that there are some characters where it doesn't make sense for them to smoke weed. But honestly, I tend to really like it a lot when characters smoke weed in fic, because all of my favs are insanely tightly wound and repressed.

They need to relax! They need something that will help them take it down a notch! They should be allowed to just get high and have fun with their friends being goofy. No trauma, just being allowed to relax and get gently stoned.

And also, getting high and hooking up is its own little subgenre for my OTP and I love it (and it's in character for them).

There are some pics I've read where I'm like, "...it does not make sense for these characters to smoke pot," so I kind of get it. But LOL at the idea that only American college students would casually use it.

Now I want to see a character be a weed connoisseur who has tried every different fancy strain and has detailed commentary about them all and acts about it like wine snobs do about wine? At least it'd be different and informative.

That'd require that the authors have actually smoked a bunch though and based on how they write about pot I don't think most of them have ever smoked anything.

Eh, I get it I think? College students seem to go thru phases where their entire lives are about One Thing and I've seen fic where characters act like that, not just for weed, there were a lot of fics where characters were all about drinking in the mid 2000s. Like, characters showing they were Grown Up because they drank whisky or brandy literally all the time.

I'm not sure why people think you're saying only American college students smoke weed, tho.

I think I get what you're saying, that the casual use depicted in the fic doesn't really fit the setting and/or characters well, but that it seems typical of portrayals of American college students. Now I have a question about whether the characters have access to media where those portrayals exist. Because sometimes people go looking for an experience like one they've seen.

I mainly think weed smoking (the mentality behind it and the smoke itself) is just so fucking unattractive and a huge, huge turnoff that I don't want my favourite blorbo partaking in it.
