Tropes or plots you'd like to see more of

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-07-28 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
What tropes or plotlines would you like to see more of in media?

Dude gets magicked into a chick, learns to love it. Same as always.

+1

That trope has been the source of so many broken eggs.

It needs to come back, because it's honest-to-God helped a lot of people.

I just want to see more honest to goodness, unsullied, square jawed and bright eyed, capital H, Heroes. Gimme my knights in shining armor, mounties in red serge, and white hatted cowboys. With a dastardly badguy who is bad just because he's rotten and with no trauma or bad backstory.

Come on, I need this, we all need this.

Hard same. Give me heroes doing heroic things. And bad guys who are maybe complex but still clearly happily evil.

Also, dark things are fine, but keep a sense of hope. And a happy ending.

No. No complex badguys. Baddies as complex as Ming the Merciless from the old Flash Gordon movie. Exactly as complex as the Minger.

I'd be cool with that too.

Or, if they really must include a sad backstory, make it CLEAR that the sad backstory in no way mitigates, diminishes, or excuses the evil behavior. Leave no space whatsoever in the narrative for people to act like the sad backstory means everyone's obligated to forgive and ~understand~ the evil behavior.

Honestly, this is the reason I became such a huge fan of My Adventures with Superman.

Superman himself is as good as you can be, and a complete puppy that wants to do a LOT of good. Brainiac, this season, is an unrepentant monster whose VA outright shines in his role as a villain.

My faves. Capture to save the other, Wings, Daemons, Arranged Marriage, Soulmates if done right, Abo if done right, Magic Systems aka Powered AUs.

If we're speaking Mainstream Media then it's Gender Intrigue and the usual Good VS Bad.

Characters that struggle with redemption but make it in the end.

It's usually either instantly redeemed and a good guy now because of one thing they did, or unredeemed/unredeemable to the end.

Oh, so much yes. I love a good redemption story, but so often it isn't believable. So often characters don't have to work for it, and everyone just accepts it without question.

Re: Tropes or plots you'd like to see more of

Yeah it's always like they do one action that risks their life then suddenly everything they did before to cause the whole situation to happen in the first place is forgotten about. Plots don't treat that as "a start" or "an opportunity for them to continue to change" which they should, and treat it like the redemption is magically complete.

Stories where characters struggle with redemption and fail exist, tons of tragic villains, but ones where they struggle + succeed are pretty rare.

Especially struggle + succeed without dying.

Yes! When it works, it really, really works. My two favorite horror movies are both scifi horror.

Yes, this! Alien is one of my favourite films of all time, and while I love Aliens, it just doesn't have that same sense of dread for me that the first film had. I know a lot of that is unavoidable since it's a sequel and the audience/protagonist already know what the threat is.

I went to a one-off showing of Alien in 4K a few years ago with the most quiet, respectful audience ever and it completely mesmerized me all over again. Can you recommend any other good sci-fi horrors?

For movies, I actually enjoyed Underwater starring Kristen Stewart. The Host (2006) is also great.

For video games, I cannot recommend Signalis enough. The atmosphere is fantastic. Play it on easy (like I did) so you can enjoy the story without being super frustrated.

For books, I enjoyed Episode Thirteen by Craig DiLouie and Salvation Day by Kali Wallace.

And for podcasts, Wolf 359 is a mix of comedy, horror, and drama. SAYER is also fantastic.

Woman disguises herself as Man, Man likes her but doesn't know she's a Woman. That Twelfth Night/Just One Of the Guys shit. Is that a trope?

Well-written redemption arcs where the redeemed character doesn't die at the end. Two-or-more entities end up having to share a body and work together. Love triangles that end in polyamory.

More comfort fics, please. I’m tired of the hurt. Or slice of life fics. I love my heroics, but I also love my characters enjoying each other’s company.

Well done redemption arcs where the former villain has to work for it and it doesn't hinge on just doing one good thing.

Heroes being actual heroes, not just Designated Heroes. I don't mind them having flaws, but I want those flaws to be balanced by genuine good qualities that are shown, not just talked about. I also want them to treat their friends and allies well, with consequences if they don't.

"Thing is done where what happens in fiction is completely different from what happens in real life, but the real life thing happens instead of the fictional thing."

It's always so unexpected and leads to some of the best comedy (especially physical comedy) around.

If anybody reading this likes the same, the HBO show Barry has a lot of it.
