I’ve seen headcanons become the defacto fanon and anyone who doesn’t go with the crowd is subjected to abuse. It’s especially grievous with trans headcanons because anyone who doesn’t treat it as canon is called a transphobe. There have been doxxings, threats, plus general abuse. There’s very much an air of “get out of our sandbox” in the fandoms where I’ve run across a headcanon being taken as canon and sometimes it’s even spelled out.

And this is part of why I've come to the conclusion that what a good lot of people want is an excuse to be awful to others. They may say they're striving for a just world, but their actions reveal otherwise: given the opportunity, they'd gladly take on the mantle of bully, oppressor, tyrant.

Sadly, agreed. I think it's about feeling superior to others, more powerful than others, right vs. other people being wrong, etc. But there are a LOT of people who would seize the opportunity and try to squash other people if they could.
