Unless the "trans headcanon" folks are requesting that you don't write any headcanon that's inconsistent with the popular headcanon, I don't see how you're being asked to leave any sandbox. Or is this a preemptive decision based on a past bad experience?

Not OP but I mean, I have seen it happen in some fandoms that if you didn't write/draw a "claimed" character as the thing they were claimed as, you got major hate so yeah, it can happen.

(SA And also, when a headcanon you don't agree with gets so widely spread that it's almost the only content that remains in that fandom for that character, it's not really for you anymore after a certain point. Like, I stopped reading any fic in certain fandoms because the amount of a certain headcanon was basically turning into fanon and almost everyone was writing/drawing it).

As a new writer in a particular fandom, I've noticed there seems to be a pretty consistent headcanon about a particular physical trait with a certain character and while I can see where it's coming from and I generally like the idea behind it...I...haven't written the character with it because there's no direct evidence of it existing in canon and I just don't feel it fitting in with my writing. I do worry from time to time if somebody's going to jump in and tell me I'm writing the character wrong for not including it but so far so good~

It doesn't have to go that far, but I've definitely seen situations where a particular headcanon gets really popular and then people who don't subscribe to it are treated like they're Doing It Wrong, which is pretty silly. It's just that when it comes to trans headcanons, emotions are running pretty damn high and it's easy to go ohhhh, you don't share this headcanon? Transphobe! because people are either being jerks or so invested that not sharing their headcanon feels like a personal attack to them. It's not rational, but it's totally fandom.

I’ve seen headcanons become the defacto fanon and anyone who doesn’t go with the crowd is subjected to abuse. It’s especially grievous with trans headcanons because anyone who doesn’t treat it as canon is called a transphobe. There have been doxxings, threats, plus general abuse. There’s very much an air of “get out of our sandbox” in the fandoms where I’ve run across a headcanon being taken as canon and sometimes it’s even spelled out.

And this is part of why I've come to the conclusion that what a good lot of people want is an excuse to be awful to others. They may say they're striving for a just world, but their actions reveal otherwise: given the opportunity, they'd gladly take on the mantle of bully, oppressor, tyrant.

Sadly, agreed. I think it's about feeling superior to others, more powerful than others, right vs. other people being wrong, etc. But there are a LOT of people who would seize the opportunity and try to squash other people if they could.

DA. Not only trans but a lot of headcanons but I've stopped reading and making stuff for some fandoms because
1) some people are aggressive if you don't include their headcanon
2) most works are with this headcanon and if you are not interested in it you have nothing left to read
