I miss LJ and the commando much! But I don’t miss the sporkings or MSTing. Too much of that was way past the line and it was often just an excuse to bully someone.

This. The fics that did actually deserve a trashing could be counted on one hand. But the vast majority that got sporked were just making fun of a preteens' first fic. These may not have been good writing, but they were entirely benign.

Agreed. And the sporkers always hated the kinds of fics they read. So, don't read those fic.

I'm part of a spork comm that migrated over from LJ to DW, and while admittedly I can only speak for the state of affairs there, the landscape has significantly shifted. We tend to go more after mainstream media, and even when we do go after fanfics, our sporks have been more analytical in nature than detrimental, looking at why the decisions writers make are bad and offering ways that they could still get what they're going for without warping characters OOC or adding melodrama for the sake of it. We seek to rebuild rather than tear up, so to speak.

But again, I can only speak for das_sporking2 in particular. Not sure what the state of affairs on other MST-oriented comms would be.

There is too much sanctimonious performative "nice"ness these days. At least sporkings were honest about what they were doing, unlike the two faced performatives on here. Their "nice"ness never extends to those whom they disagree with, you'll notice.

I’m sure there are people who are disingenuously nice in some cases while being horrible in others.

But I’ve had many civil discussions here with people who disagreed with me.

Sporkings weren’t honest, though. They were a way to gatekeep while punching down on teenagers and anyone who wasn’t a native English speaker and anyone with a learning disability. Sometimes they were about taking a shot at a rival. But mainly they were about punching down on the most vulnerable of the community.

I...never actually met a pre-teen *OR* teen on LJ. Unless the people I were talking to were all lying, most were in their late 20's, or 30's, or 40's....

And yeah, some of them couldn't write for shit.

There were tons of teens on LJ! I was one of them and one of the older teens in my fandom circle. But IME people my age were mostly in the animanga & video games & bandom side of fandom. TV & movie & book fandoms tended to have older people in them.

I knew a bunch, three of them became lifelong friends of mine. They’re now about the age I was when we first got to know each other. But they never disclosed their age in fandom places and one for sure lied about her age all the time.

the reason I joined LJ in the first place back in 2008 was MSTings of bad House fanfics. I had typed in my two favorite shows at the time into a search engine that doesn't even exist now and that was what I got.
