Locking ao3 fic

(Anonymous) 2024-07-31 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I've noticed a bunch of writers I follow lock all their ao3 fics over concerns about bots scraping content to train AIs. To the writer anons, how concerned are you about this? I don't want to lock mine, but I don't want to get scraped either, and I'm not dumb enough to think ao3 leadership saying "Please don't scrape our site" will stop anything.

I really don't care? I mean...just where is an AI going to publish my A/B/O smut?
I dunno...seems like a weird thing to worry about. Anyone who can access AO3 or any other fanfic site can potentially copy/paste whatever is there, or download it, so....
Eh.

on a personal level, i'm not concerned. if it scrapes my fic, well, i can't really stop them and i refuse to lock down more than 2 decades of fic across several different sites because of this.

i figure, at this point, if someone wants to steal my fic, they've already done so, for whatever reason. it is what it is.

that being said, i do think it's utterly reprehensible to train AI by stealing things people have worked hard on. But then, I don't like AI and the desperate way people push for everyone to use AI either, so. I'm pretty biased. To me, AI is meant to do shit like learn how to wash my dishes.

Not write my fic.

I want AI to take my chores away from me and leave me more time for creativity. But AI seems to be leeching creativity, leaving us more time for...chores. It's very backwards.

The sad thing is that the scraping has probably already happened before we became aware of it. If You're posting anything new then its probably a good idea to lock it until AO3 can find a way to prevent the bots from scraping the site any further.

I'm not locking mine, but I mostly post weird kinky fics so I hope the bots enjoy tentacles spurting cum in their romance stories.

I have a lot of trouble caring.

I mean, I don't like that AI is being used to take the place of people when it comes to producing art. But I also don't think that's likely to last very long, given that it's iterative rather than generative: it needs actual people to keep creating; otherwise, it inevitably commits a kind of incest and produce all the defects associated with it.

But also, like, it's...fanfic. I'm not getting paid for it. I don't want people outside of a certain circle to even see it. I really don't feel as if something is being taken from me if my fic gets scraped.

I don't want people outside of a certain circle to even see it. I really don't feel as if something is being taken from me if my fic gets scraped.

For me, those two points are in direct conflict with each other.

I don't want people outside of a certain circle to even see it... thus, I really, really, really don't want faceless corporations from outside that circle coming in and shoving it into a machine that will ultimately circulate variations of it into even wider circles completely so far removed from the one I originally wanted it to be contained within.

SA. Apologies for the failed underline. Should have stopped after 'from outside that circle', as emphasis.

Huh. I always figured it was scraped long ago. I don’t like it but I truly believe we’re far too late to do anything about it.

I really don't care. They're welcome to scrap every single word if they want to. I genuinely don't get why people are so virulent when it comes to AI.

I don't really care. They can scrape if they want, I'm not about this whole moral panic.

Re: Locking ao3 fic

Not wanting to be scraped isn't about "moral panic". It's about not wanting your work fed into a machine and regurgitated without your permission.

If you don't mind, that's fine, but don't conflate it with wanky fandom morality crusades about shipping or bad thoughts = bad actions or whatever.

Please leave me alone.

You posted a comment in a discussion thread. If you want to be left alone, maybe don't post comments in a thread specifically intended for people to respond to and discuss.

Here’s that attention you ordered!

You clearly don’t have the wits of an empty walnut shell. Not wanting my work stolen and repackaged and distributed isn’t a moral panic. And engaging in discussion anon and then saying leave me alone is about the stupidest shit I’ve seen here in a very long time.

Re: Locking ao3 fic

That's not really what AI does, though. The term AI is a misnomer in the first place, it's essentially just really fancy predictive text. It's about using a huge dataset to determine which word probably comes next in a sequence. Your content would have to be incredibly basic to actually be "regurgitated" by the AI.

Why do you think its about morals and not theft?
