All purpose question and advice thread

I need an early 80s American Car for a character. Model year can be no later than summer '84. It has to be a car for senior local management for a multinational company, a gift the company is throwing in as part of a signing bonus, and it has to be from an American brand. I was thinking a Cadillac something, but what the something is I don't know. I'm not that familiar with American car brands from that era.

Hi, I was a teenager in the 80s and I'm American. May I recommend the 1982 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, the 2-door coupe if you wanna be sporty!

Friend of mine got one for graduation. It was a sweet ride!

Job hunting

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-07-30 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I do want to start looking for another. Don't know if I can even find one. But I'd like to give it a try. What tips do you all have for how to do a search. And how to market yourself without a huge list of references?

Re: Job hunting

(Anonymous) 2024-07-31 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Apply to as many jobs as possible. Even if you don't think you qualify. Tailor the resume a bit with keywords from the job listings. Use AI to help.

Re: Job hunting

(Anonymous) 2024-07-31 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
For marketing yourself, maybe make a list of things you have been doing in your current job/previous job and deconstruct them down into transferable skills when writing up about yourself.
IE: I clean on the job - organization skills and an eye for detail to maintain a safe environment.

If you've done any regular volunteer work, use that as a source of transferable skills and references.

Check out the Ask a Manager blog if you haven't already! She's got a lot of advice for job seekers and quite frankly, has answered most questions that could come up during a job search multiple times by now.

Locking ao3 fic

(Anonymous) 2024-07-31 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I've noticed a bunch of writers I follow lock all their ao3 fics over concerns about bots scraping content to train AIs. To the writer anons, how concerned are you about this? I don't want to lock mine, but I don't want to get scraped either, and I'm not dumb enough to think ao3 leadership saying "Please don't scrape our site" will stop anything.

I really don't care? I mean...just where is an AI going to publish my A/B/O smut?
I dunno...seems like a weird thing to worry about. Anyone who can access AO3 or any other fanfic site can potentially copy/paste whatever is there, or download it, so....
Eh.

Re: Locking ao3 fic

(Anonymous) 2024-07-31 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
on a personal level, i'm not concerned. if it scrapes my fic, well, i can't really stop them and i refuse to lock down more than 2 decades of fic across several different sites because of this.

i figure, at this point, if someone wants to steal my fic, they've already done so, for whatever reason. it is what it is.

that being said, i do think it's utterly reprehensible to train AI by stealing things people have worked hard on. But then, I don't like AI and the desperate way people push for everyone to use AI either, so. I'm pretty biased. To me, AI is meant to do shit like learn how to wash my dishes.

Not write my fic.

I want AI to take my chores away from me and leave me more time for creativity. But AI seems to be leeching creativity, leaving us more time for...chores. It's very backwards.

The sad thing is that the scraping has probably already happened before we became aware of it. If You're posting anything new then its probably a good idea to lock it until AO3 can find a way to prevent the bots from scraping the site any further.

I'm not locking mine, but I mostly post weird kinky fics so I hope the bots enjoy tentacles spurting cum in their romance stories.

I have a lot of trouble caring.

I mean, I don't like that AI is being used to take the place of people when it comes to producing art. But I also don't think that's likely to last very long, given that it's iterative rather than generative: it needs actual people to keep creating; otherwise, it inevitably commits a kind of incest and produce all the defects associated with it.

But also, like, it's...fanfic. I'm not getting paid for it. I don't want people outside of a certain circle to even see it. I really don't feel as if something is being taken from me if my fic gets scraped.

Huh. I always figured it was scraped long ago. I don’t like it but I truly believe we’re far too late to do anything about it.

Re: Locking ao3 fic

(Anonymous) 2024-07-31 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't care. They're welcome to scrap every single word if they want to. I genuinely don't get why people are so virulent when it comes to AI.

I don't really care. They can scrape if they want, I'm not about this whole moral panic.

How does Discord work?

(Anonymous) 2024-07-31 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Please help a Fandom Old. How easy is it to compartmentalize your activities on Discord? Can anyone you connect with see all the groups you belong to?

I'd potentially use it for family chat and fannish stuff, but DO NOT want to cross those two streams. Would I have to make multiple accounts to keep stuff separate?

Re: How does Discord work?

(Anonymous) 2024-07-31 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if it's different for a paid account, but Discord only shows me mutual friends and servers. So unless it's a devil's sacrament situation, no one would know.

How do I know if something is a date or just a friend hang? Is there some sort of magical way to just tell? /o\

I would always ask. “So are you asking as a date or this just a hang kinda thing?”

People who order non-alcoholic drinks at a bar/pub...

(Anonymous) 2024-07-31 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
... what do you get?

Re: People who order non-alcoholic drinks at a bar/pub...

(Anonymous) 2024-07-31 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Water most of the time and offer to pay for it as a soft drink if they don’t already charge for it. Sometimes I order a soft drink depending on where I am (coke in America and the local version of lemonade pretty much everywhere in Europe) but I really prefer to just drink water most of the time.

Usually a cranberry seltzer. Refreshing and bubbly.
