it's not even strictly a cartoon thing, although that doesn't help. the Nowhere King from centaurworld, for example, managed some effective genuine menace. but every HH character feels so utterly quintessentially Middle School Goth Sketchbook Dump to me. look at his stupid teeth. his full scenewolf hairears. the inability to commit to either sharp clean formal styling or ragged damaged styling. come ON

(Anonymous) 2024-08-04 12:48 am (UTC)(link)Also, I do find Alastor's full-on Eldritch Horror form to be genuinely pretty scary. I mean, the cartoon itself isn't particularly scary, but if I translate the cartoon to real life imagery and imagine what Eldritch-Horror!Alastor would be like to come across in a forest or a dark, abandoned building or something, yeah, that'd be nightmare fuel for life.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-04 02:42 am (UTC)(link)If someone's bothering to communicate through pictures what their fictional world supposedly looks like, I'm going to take that at face value, as opposed to trying to argue that everything really looks like it was painted by Michaelangelo, you just have to use your imagination to appreciate it.
If the story works for you even though the art is trashy, cool. But the fact that you can make up a version of Eldritch horror Alastor in your head that's compelling is not something other people can be expected to find in canon.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-04 05:27 am (UTC)(link)I can when I read books or fanfiction and make an idea in my head of what the characters must look like from the written descriptions. But when I've got a picture in front of me, the fact that other fans can go "what would this character look like if he wasn't a cat? Or if he was photorealistic? Or in anime style?" and so on is just magical to me. Because the design wants to burn itself into my retinas. Which is great if I want to be able to draw things from memory, and an annoyance when that's not the point.

We don't really know much about what he did in life (aside from Word of God that he was a serial killer), but based on his actions in Hell...he targets other people like him mostly because they offer him the most fun. He doesn't like people who punch down, but that seems to be a very minor point in his victim selection.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-03 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)Also, Vivzie likened him to Dexter herself and the people we see him actively WANT to engage in a fight are all horrible people. I don't think he's good, mind, but "no moral compass" seems to be incorrect.

If you mean giving up being a sadistic little asshole...then, yeah, he definitely wouldn't.
But he does have a soft side for some people - aside from his refusal to target the weak, he shows genuine affection to Niffty, seems to have actually liked Mimzy before she became a threat to the hotel, and...may be truly fond of Charlie (hard to tell how much of that is because of whoever's got him leashed, how much is fucking with Lucifer, and how much is real, but...there are a few scenes where it seems real). So...being genuinely affectionate with whoever he's paired with in the fic, and maybe shielding them from seeing him at his most Alastor, that seems reasonable.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-04 12:25 am (UTC)(link)Ultimately, I just want semi-feral!bottom!Alastor and service-top!Lucifer, and they're both very repressed and confused and weird about it. I don't want Alastor to be soft for Lucifer, but I am very interested in exploring his potential for vulnerability - as well as his deep commitment to never appearing vulnerable.
In ships where one character is harsh, domineering, and obsessed with control, and the other is comparatively unassuming and wants to be helpful and good, I'm almost always going to headcanon the one who's obsessed with control as the sub/bottom, because it's just what I personally find way more interesting.
I love when the relationship a pairing has with each other directly challenges the characters' sense of self. There's a lot of ways that can manifest. Having the prickly, obsessed-with-control character grapple with the fact that they want to be bent over a table and fucked stupid, while the character who feels like they exist to serve the purposes of others and is totally out of touch with their own authentic desires grapples with feeling possessive, lustful, and dominant is one way it can be done, and it's a ship dynamic I'm particularly fond of.
There's also some ambiguity when it comes to what landed Alastor in hell, as well as the shit he's done since he got there. There's no question that he's done some monstrous things, but when it comes to the stuff he's done in hell there's a certain degree of "When in Rome" moral flexibility at play, and the idea that he was a Dexter-style serial killer in life is a popular bit of fanon. Personally I enjoy the ambiguity of Alastor's character. I find a character who is skirting the moral event horizon and whose exact nature is a mystery, to be far more interesting than a character whom we know is simply a monstrous psychopath incapable of real goodness or empathy.
