i know it's snobby of me but I just CANNOT take this overdesigned hot topic mess seriously on its own terms

"one of the most powerful warlords ever" honey that's a bargain-bin edgelord wannabe jack skellington hoodie

it's not even strictly a cartoon thing, although that doesn't help. the Nowhere King from centaurworld, for example, managed some effective genuine menace. but every HH character feels so utterly quintessentially Middle School Goth Sketchbook Dump to me. look at his stupid teeth. his full scenewolf hairears. the inability to commit to either sharp clean formal styling or ragged damaged styling. come ON

I was kinda feeling that way before watching, but in the world of the show, when everyone's drawn in this very over the top, exaggerated style, it worked pretty well for me. I liked the art style a lot more in motion than in screenshots too.

Same. "Middle School Goth Sketchbook Dump" really describes perfectly the vibe I get looking at this show and its art, and is the sole reason I can't stomach more than a minute of it.

You're not wrong that the vibe is Middle School Goth Sketchbook Dump. I just don't care, personally. I don't think of the animation as being what the characters actually look like; it's just the cartoon representation of what they look like.

Also, I do find Alastor's full-on Eldritch Horror form to be genuinely pretty scary. I mean, the cartoon itself isn't particularly scary, but if I translate the cartoon to real life imagery and imagine what Eldritch-Horror!Alastor would be like to come across in a forest or a dark, abandoned building or something, yeah, that'd be nightmare fuel for life.

DA

If someone's bothering to communicate through pictures what their fictional world supposedly looks like, I'm going to take that at face value, as opposed to trying to argue that everything really looks like it was painted by Michaelangelo, you just have to use your imagination to appreciate it.

If the story works for you even though the art is trashy, cool. But the fact that you can make up a version of Eldritch horror Alastor in your head that's compelling is not something other people can be expected to find in canon.

Lol, the story doesn't work for me. I just don't care. Canon is just the building blocks to me. Hazbin Hotel is a decent set of building blocks. I like it for that reason. I don't need to work to imagine the characters in a more realistic style; that's just automatic for me. I have to work harder to imagine them as they exist on the screen, frankly. I gather that's not how it works for you, and that's fine.

different anon but this comment makes me realize i've got a damn good imagination and i am so lucky. i can visualize cartoons as live action and live action as cartoons and cartoons in different art/animation styles. words on a page to live action or cartoons. just wish i could draw that shit...

AYRT

I can when I read books or fanfiction and make an idea in my head of what the characters must look like from the written descriptions. But when I've got a picture in front of me, the fact that other fans can go "what would this character look like if he wasn't a cat? Or if he was photorealistic? Or in anime style?" and so on is just magical to me. Because the design wants to burn itself into my retinas. Which is great if I want to be able to draw things from memory, and an annoyance when that's not the point.

I don't think this is snobby at all, anon. I feel the same way.

+1 lmao I can not take OP remotely seriously when their blorbo looks like THAT. The stupid design means I can not take this "serial killer" or "warlord" thing seriously, either.
