And SBA's default response is always "they weren't carrying a firearm/the right sort of firearm" despite it being proven that a gun is one of the least effective ways to stop a bear attack.

People (okay, mostly men) who are super into guns like to think they're the solution to lots of problems and tend to ignore reality, which suggests that no, they don't fix everything. They DO give the person carrying them a rather inflated, false sense of security, though.

Yeah, there was a mass attack with a large knife in my country (not the UK one) and it was stopped by a (female) police officer with a gun. All the "we should be allowed guns" men went off about how unfair it was that we're not allowed to roam around in public with guns because they would have personally totally stopped that guy, and all I could think was how much worse it would have been if the perpetrator had had a gun.

Yeah, you have only to look at the U.S. to see how much worse it could get. "Good guy with a gun" is one of the most cherished myths of Second Amendment nuts, conveniently forgetting that there are plenty of occasions where the "good guys" were armed to the teeth and failed to stop one asshole who had access to firearms when he shouldn't have.

The problem is not the lack of a good guy with a gun, the problem is the fucking plethora of bad guys with one.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-06 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
Hell, even if you have a plethora of 'good guys' with guns, they sometimes still can't (or won't) stop one bad guy with one (see Uvalde).

My friend is massively pro-gun because "ordinary people would be able to defend themselves against the police & military". I just fucking can't

(Anonymous) 2024-08-06 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
hahahahahaha oh dear. I get where they're coming from but I'd prefer a society where the police aren't absolute cunts to "ordinary people."

If said friend thinks his 12 gauge is gonna defend him from the military if it really wants to get him, then that friend is going to (very briefly) unpleasantly surprised when a predator drone says hi from two miles high and five miles away.
