This feels perilously close to saying that if she hadn't riled him up, then he wouldn't have hurt her, after all she had to have known what a terrible temper he had and how he liked to be in control, so she should have tried to be as biddable as possible to avoid that.

No. The point is that you don't deliberately put someone else in the middle of a situation like that, especially without letting the person in on what you're doing. That's what the issue is.

While "this man is an abusive asshole" doesn't mean, "you deserve the consequences of pushing back against him," it also doesn't mean, "anything you do to push back against him is okay." And using someone, without their knowledge, to get back at an asshole is a pretty shitty thing to do.
