look I have a favourite f/f ship in my little fandom. It supported by _anything_ in canon? No, one of them already has a gf they love, the other is widely read as ace (with far more in-canon support than my preferred ship).
And sometimes I see posts from people putting 'evidence' together and I'm like, nooo we don't need to do that! They're just cute girls, I wanna read about them kissing, I know it's not real! I don't even want it to be canon

+1

My main f/f ship is definitely not gonna become canon and I don't care in the slightest I still like it.

I would also like it to be canon, but I don't expect it to be canon and I don't care. Some of the other shippers are always trying to come up with theories about why it's totally gonna be canon and it's like... no, guys, it's really fine, you can just think they should kiss.

Hell, I'll happily ship someone with both their canon love interest AND in a non-canon pairing with some other character I like. Totally fine if people have their preferences betweeen canon or non-canon, of course, but I've just never understood why some people always seem to act like it has to be an "either/or" scenario.

+1000 I like both!

I agree, but unfortunately there are a lot of people into shipping who treat the whole thing like sports teams and are therefore obsessed with ‘winning’ with canonisation in order to shove it into the faces of other fans and be ‘right’.

I have canon ships and fanon ships, both are fun! Sometimes I think it’d be cool if some of my fanon ships were canon but my enjoyment of them doesn’t hinge on this because I don’t view people shipping a different ship as ‘the rival team’, we’re all here to have fun.

Also, if people understood the concept of "look, fan works are their own thing, not an argument that canon should go in a specific direction".

I saw a post on tumblr a bit ago about how one of the benefits of fan works is that they can explore areas that would have been a terrible idea for canon to try (e.g. what if that plot-important character death hadn't happened). Lots of pairings fit perfectly into that territory.

So many of the bad things about fandom this decade are down to people believing that having a ship means that you must want it to be canon and have a "happy ever after" ending, and launch a scorched-earth campaign to force the writers to do so.
