I think that's what made them a really great character. I think the best villains are the ones we can understand how they got where they are.

I'm not sure if you're referring to redemption arcs, badly done redemption arcs, or just terrible events that happen to characters and make them reflect on life (and I guess any misdeeds, to whatever degree).

But I would say this kind of "180," as you put it, can work for specific characters whose original personalities were something like a "Care Bear who makes tea," but an event in canon turned them bad/bitter/evil or forced them into a situation where they had to perform a certain way for survival.

This is true, but I'm not quite comfortable with comparing someone hating their oppressor (even in a fictionalized context) to be on par with racists who jerk it to interracial fetish and whatnot.

What interests me about the ship is the ambiguity, since I agree to an extent with your interpretation. I feel both are manipulating one another and both would never put their feelings above their goals. That said, I don't think that L saying Light is his friend to throw him off means that it is completely dishonest. I think they were able to understand how each other think and engage with one another on a level that they've rarely experienced, and for someone so withdrawn and unique as L, I can believe that an enemy he had to engage so closely is something he could relate to friendship. I don't see that as going against the text, nor do I see homoerotic readings as incompatible with the idea that they are ultimately deceiving one another. I do agree a lot of shipping is OOC and dampens down their ambitions and animosity in favor of exploring the ship, to an extent that I don't love a lot of fic for them despite it being a ship I love. Just my two cents as a shipper, haha.

Doesn't sound like OP read Prince Harry's Spare. They both were raised in completely abnormal environments plus having the whole British stiff-upper-lip thing. Neither of them remotely comes across as having a mental condition, only being completely screwed up due to their upbringing as princes.

look I have a favourite f/f ship in my little fandom. It supported by _anything_ in canon? No, one of them already has a gf they love, the other is widely read as ace (with far more in-canon support than my preferred ship).
And sometimes I see posts from people putting 'evidence' together and I'm like, nooo we don't need to do that! They're just cute girls, I wanna read about them kissing, I know it's not real! I don't even want it to be canon

It would just make it all more interesting! I mean, making him fall for a human and there being a tension on his ideals and the human he finds himself caring about, very fun. (I don't self-ship, I swear, never played the game, I just like robots.)

At least with him you can play around it, but I've seen people self-ship in a loving way with AM and had the same thought as yours. It doesn't bother me thought, cheers to them.
