What interests me about the ship is the ambiguity, since I agree to an extent with your interpretation. I feel both are manipulating one another and both would never put their feelings above their goals. That said, I don't think that L saying Light is his friend to throw him off means that it is completely dishonest. I think they were able to understand how each other think and engage with one another on a level that they've rarely experienced, and for someone so withdrawn and unique as L, I can believe that an enemy he had to engage so closely is something he could relate to friendship. I don't see that as going against the text, nor do I see homoerotic readings as incompatible with the idea that they are ultimately deceiving one another. I do agree a lot of shipping is OOC and dampens down their ambitions and animosity in favor of exploring the ship, to an extent that I don't love a lot of fic for them despite it being a ship I love. Just my two cents as a shipper, haha.

Not OP, but yeah, "Light is someone L could have been genuine friends or colleagues with, were the whole Kira thing not in the way" doesn't contradict canon. Sort of a "could have been."

Unfortunately "the whole Kira thing" is the entire plot and premise and the only reason they meet at all, so...

I'm not sure why the fact the washing the feet scene (not the rain scene, or I haven't quite caught the religious reference here) is a Christian reference (to Judas washing Jesus'feet before betraying him) contradicts the homoerotic reading of the scene. Pretty sure that, for several fans, it enhances it.

I just LOVE this conviction that OP's reading is absolutely crystal right one when OP sees clear Biblical references in... Japanese manga. I am not saying that mangaka couldn't be playing with them but that is just funny

If you haven't seen how common biblical/Catholic references are in animanga and jrpgs, especially ones that deal with life/death/the afterlife, you definitely are new to the genres. Catholic priests and exorcisms are all over the place in those genres and what backdrops exactly do you think anime like Hellsing or Castlevania are set in?

Most of it is treated as mythology or supernatural and not actual religion, but it's like doubting that Greek myth might be referenced in... American comics. It's not everywhere, but it's absolutely no surprise when it happens.

I am not saying that Japanese never play with western mythology I am saying that "clear Biblical references" aren't that clear. Also sometimes they are just visually pleasing because a lot of Christian symbolism is just what it is, it's pretty. And it can work in absolutely different plots and meanings.

Also your Greek example isn't as applying as you think. Roman and Greek mythology is absolutely culturally ingrained in western culture. It's been used for centuries.

If it's just that you aren't familiar with the Bible, or your introduction to similar events was in other literature/media, I could understand that. But those events seemed very intentional to me.

Yeah, it is probably a Bible reference. Especially since Death Note was trying to be all western. But I just gonna argue that 1) cleaning (other persons) feet was (and is) a custom in different cultures. Including Japanese 2) death prophecies aren't unique to Catholics

Also Bible references do not exclude fan service to start with. Even for cultural catholics. Soooo

DA, not an expert but christianity was first introduced to Japan ~500 years ago. A fraction of the time western culture's been thinking about the greco-romans, but long enough to make an impression.
