Re: Adaptations that annoy you...

SAME. OMG. I almost walked out of Fellowship opening night when Bree was a dark, scary horror movie set instead of the last glorious moment of happiness before the actual darkness. I have never seen the other two movies for the reasons you elucidate (the more I hear about what changed, the worse it gets). The LOTR movies are the opposite of how movies have to be different from books because visuals/time/reasons, they're Jackson's fever dream as he personally interpreted the books which are NOT how most of us interpreted the books.

I do love these movies. But I also have a whole lot of issues with them. I'll add the adaption of Elrond to this list. Way to completely misunderstand his character.

No issues here.

omg wait what. whose romance subplot? I mean, in the book there is a whole side quest to find does so they can mate and make babies but uh. that wouldn't be a romance subplot afaik.

MTE.

The 1995 BBC is more for Austenites. The 2005 felt more like it was capitalizing off of rom-com fans who had a vague understanding of Jane Austen and history.

Agreed. It wasn't the same at all.

It's really MCU fatigue, not superhero fatigue.

Part of it is that MCU movies are very samey. Part of it is that Marvel releases a lot of movies - they've released 11 MCU movies over the last 4 years. And part of it is that, out of those 11 movies, 5 of them just weren't that good.

If you're going to release that much product and have people not get tired of it, you need to do better than that. The reason that the MCU is doing badly is basically because of Eternals, Multiverse of Madness, Love and Thunder, Quantumania, and Marvels.

Netflix’s The Witcher. I wouldn’t have cared at all (I was practically against a live action adaptation) except the nonstop promotional bullshit that they were following the books. Everything about it was so bad and some of the casting was extremely racist. But during season 1, anyone who said anything bad about it was called a racist because of the actor who plays Yennifer. Her race is unimportant in terms of the character but her acting sure as fuck matters and she’s terrible. She also isn’t pretty enough (or have the charisma necessary to make up for it) or commanding enough to be believable. And then there’s Dandelion which is just…how the fuck do you model a show on time skips and then forget to age your human character? And the choice to style him the way they did…ugh. Threw me right out any time I tried to watch. The showrunner truly sucks in every way. But saying that just makes the show fandom scream about misogyny. Like, hello? Women showrunners who suck aren’t immune to being called out about just because they’re women.

At least I’ve had the joy of watching everything about that show crash and burn. And I’m happy the show fans have left the main fandom and carved out their own niche. We like what we like, I have no problem with that. But man it got annoying for a couple years there with show fans trying to impose spoiler warnings or posting content about the show but not tagging it as the show and instead making it look like it was about The Witcher, not Netflix’s The Witcher. And I’m happy that it was so bad that it’s already legendary for it.

This is barely related, but a fact I loved discovering (from a scholar doing a close-read on youtube) was that by the standards of the day, the Bennets are actually of a higher class than the Bingleys. They don't own a home outright, which means they don't have an estate - and therefore aren't landed gentry, unlike Mr. Bennet and his girls by extension.

(Also the Bingleys are apparently actually tradesfolk who have conveniently forgotten where their wealth started? I really did not read closely enough.)

Yep. I live in a major city where the smaller side genre films actually DO get a lot of billing and even then, they still won't compare to the big stuff.

HR Mencken once said "No one in this world, so far as I know — and I have searched the records for years, and employed agents to help me — has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people."

And I doubt that's become any less true in the near-century since he said it (eg Republicans suddenly whining about Rage Against the Machine being "political").

Miniminuteman has a bunch of archaeology stuff, maybe a bit "youtubey" in presentation, not fully sure what you mean by that so idk. I'm into religious history and I really like ReligionForBreakfast and Esoterica. Also YaleCourses for just straight up recorded lectures. I'd love some more (pre-)history recommendations too.

I threw this out when this showed up in the secret-submitting thread, but has anyone here seen The Legend of Hillbilly John (1972)? I have to admit I haven't, having only read about it in a review, but it's apparently a good-natured (but cheap and flawed) attempt to bring some of the Silver John movies to the big screen. If anyone has, I'd like to hear what they thought.

since you mentioned animals hope that includes reptiles because my recs are reptile channels that lean into the education side of things:
All Canadian Reptile Girl
Snake Discovery
Clint's Reptiles
they are all also kid friendly channels

for something passively educational and also quite relaxing check out Brady Brandwood's channel and his Leon the lobster related videos

Hey, the Internet has always had a damnable way of flattening tone, so you may just have to break out some kind of method of flagging sarcasm unless you really know your audience.

For the record, there is a history of at least one anon using every opportunity to bash AO3 for their own reasons, so it's not surprising that someone might get annoyed by a comment that does the same (joke or not). Considering your initial comment implies you've been here for a while, surely you were aware of this possibility?

I really like Technology Connections. He's just fun, and deals with a fairly random range of topics - I'm especially fond of his videos about old technology (mechanical pinball machines, RCA Selectavision, the Beta/VHS competition (and why Beta wasn't actually better on the whole)), but he's also covered more modern stuff, and he's still interesting with them.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-12 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but this.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-12 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this is technically true, because Mr. Bennet inherited his estate and Mr. Bingley has to purchase his, because his father was a tradesman, albeit a wealthy one. His father's goal was to purchase a family estate so his son could be a gentleman and move up in rank with every successive generation. In other words, to join the same class of landowners with estates as Mr. Bennet and Mr. Darcy.

People tend to forget this because Bingley's wealth puts him on more equal footing, and because his sisters (especially Caroline) are a snobby hypocrites who sneer at the Gardiners for being in the trade even though their father started the same way. It's subtle for modern audiences, but I think in Austen's time people would've understood.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-12 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Sad but true. It's a shame though, because having a reasonable grasp of the time period's customs understanding how entailments worked and why marriage was so important to women makes all of Austen's work a lot more interesting. Without that understanding, it seems far more like a frivolous story.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy movie

The first adaptation of the story that I thought really missed the mark on tone and humour.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy movie

A bunch of gratuitous blood. A serious weakening/flattening of several interesting characters. And totally bafflingly… swapping two characters’ names for no reason at all.

How dull can a person be to still be an MCU fan?
