Word. Word word word word word. *bakes you a word pie, takes you to wordville on a word plane. . .*

Ahem. Can I friend you? The more I see of you, the cooler you look. ^_^

[identity profile] longlongwaytogo.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
:) Totally. Though I'm afraid one day I'll say something and you'll be all '... no. Sorry. No longer cool. *deletes friendship*'
:D I'll go friend you too. :)

[identity profile] pretentioustfu.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, don't worry. I'm not like that. ^_^ The only reason I ever defriend/ban people is if they're stalkers/trolls. As long as you don't leak locked/filtered stuff and don't threaten me or anyone on my flist, I'm fine with you. ^_^ Though I'm sometimes a lazy poster.

Oh and want to be just friended or on the personal filter? The personal filter is for non-fandom related stuff that isn't part of a greater social cause like my Rebecca Riley activism or Blog Against Theocracy. It's not TMI or whining, it's stuff like memes and observations and whatnot that doesn't really go in "fandom" or "social activism."

[identity profile] longlongwaytogo.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
Filter sounds good too. :) I like talking about non fandom things.
My lj is total rubbish and no one ever responds because it's full of nothing lol. Ah well! Trying to improve. :)

[identity profile] pretentioustfu.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. Mine used to be full of nothing with sides of TMI and wangst, then I moved to a new name (the one I have now), cleaned up the latter two and made it fandom-only with the rare side of social activism (and non-wangsty, non-wanky personal filter posts) after I got stalked and decided I never, ever, ever wanted to inspire someone to do something that horrible again. *cringe*

[identity profile] longlongwaytogo.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm totally paranoid about posting things on my LJ, which is why I generally don't. Everything I say in comms though I'd say in real life, so if people find it, that's not a concern of mine really. But my own LJ? Nope. It's why I never had a diary either.
But feel free to comment on my randomness. :)

[identity profile] longlongwaytogo.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
And you can find me a lot on heard_of_it which is a comm I recently made for people who like obscure fandoms/non mainstream tv shows, books and movies...
Yay. Made a friend...

I do, when I'm not busy or otherwise occupied. Though I'll probably be going away soon, my pathetic attempt to learn drawing and World of Warcrack are calling. . . the sirens they are. . . ~_^

[identity profile] longlongwaytogo.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
... and I'm supposed to be writing an essay lol... Ah well. Well, hope to see you around the place then. :)
And yay we hijacked fandomsecrets here a bit.

I will be. ^_^

And yay, we did. *wanders off*

[identity profile] longlongwaytogo.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
yay! :) It'll be great to have you there, especially since you seem to like responding to people. That will hopefully be a big part of the group, and I'm only just starting it up so it's a bit... unsure... at the moment. :) Finding its feet.

[identity profile] pretentioustfu.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
*nods* I have a couple of small fandoms, but they're small for a reason: the canon sucks, for the most part. One of those is SaGa Frontier, a video game for the PS1, which had some interesting characters, but suffered from character overload, not enough plot, not enough worldbuilding, and more, but which DOES feature one of the first canon yaoi couples in Square-Enix history aside from Mukki/Cloud in FFVII. . .

And on an unrelated tangent, is it possible for to hate a large fandom's canon but love a small subset of it? I tried to get into Heroes, never really liked it much, EXCEPT for Hiro and Ando, who are so doing it love.

[identity profile] longlongwaytogo.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ah right. I have small fandoms because... people just haven't heard of them, in most cases. Though one of the shows I really love, has like... some of the dodgiest continuity EVER, and it's so cheesy sometimes, but gah... love it anyway. :) You might be able to find some new fandoms to enjoy.
Yes, I think it is possible, totally. Why not!

[identity profile] pretentioustfu.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
*definitely looks forward to it*

Yeah. Hiro and Ando very much remind me of some original characters I'm creating, Hiro's an otaku and yet portrayed very sympathetically so far (as in a kindhearted, wonderful guy who wants to be a hero, not a scary creepy rapist monster or something), and their friendship reminds me of my current OTP's, if a bit less slashy for now. So they were like instant love for me, even though the rest of the characters AND THE SERIES ITSELF turned me off like nothing else. Wangst and choppy plotting and I could barely stand any of the female characters, which is a first for me.

[identity profile] longlongwaytogo.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
Female characters are usually a problem. *sigh*. At least for me. In every show. I haven't seen enough of Heroes to know about all the wangst, though of course I noticed the choppy plotting. I'm so behind in watchign that show...
I like Hiro and Ando. And if they're like your original characters, that's really cool. :)

[identity profile] pretentioustfu.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think Heroes suffers from the same thing SaGa Frontier did, to be honest: too many characters, not enough focus on specific characters OR on the "whys and wherefores." Instead, we're just thrown in with a "suspend all disbelief" and honestly, I think that's kind of lazy writing. And yeah. I was liking Cameron in House for a while, but she got a case of Mary Sue I wonder if anyone knows how to cure THAT and ugh. I'd love to like more female characters, but most of the ones I do like are from anime, manga, and video games.

[identity profile] longlongwaytogo.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't see SaGa Frontier either... Sometimes though, I do like something that's pure fantasy/action/suspend disbelief stuff... without a lot of character. But if it feels like they're trying for character and don't get there, then it's annoying.
Why are so many female characters just irritating... *sigh*. It's why I love the Jasper Fforde 'Thursday Next' series (books). She's great. :D

[identity profile] pretentioustfu.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 09:58 am (UTC)(link)

Exactly.

Why are so many female characters just irritating... *sigh*.

I can tell you why. At least, in a lot of mainstream fandoms (whatever country it's from), there's this want to make the female character appeal to "everywoman." So she falls into an appropriate cultural trope, and she's sadly mostly just there for the female viewers' identification or self-insertion, or more commonly, for the male viewers' wankfodder.

Therefore, most female characters will be hormonal/bitchy/if it were a man bipolar, man-hungry, wanting BABIES NOW, with a few nods to equality and modernity but still Knowing Their Place, and so on and so on.

I'd so love to see more female characters who are capable of keeping a level head, maybe a few pounds over the norm, who have more pressing concerns than the usual chick-lit stuff, and who didn't want kids because of their more important issues/because they just didn't.

[identity profile] longlongwaytogo.livejournal.com 2007-04-11 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree with that. I really would love to see it. Female characters who are actually... characters. Luckily with britcoms, though there aren't that many female characters usually, the ones there are, they're allowed to be quirky. And aren't usually forced to be pretty, just like the men aren't.
I think one day I'm going to write a list of all the tv shows books and movies I can think of where the women are actually good.
One of my favourite shows has a fantastic female character though... :D Not at all cliche. http://community.livejournal.com/heard_of_it/11308.html But she's sure in the minority. Which is such a huge pity.

And yep, I think that's what's going on as well.
