Dear American Sportsball Fans...

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Help me out here. What are the seasons for the big three sports, Gridiron Football, Baseball, and Basketball, and do American kids really get all competitive about them in school? We just don't do school teams like that here, so I don't know how that all works.

Also, am I missing any important school sports there? Movies and TV make it seem like it is always just one of those three. Or Lacrosse if they are really posh.

At least with football, how obsessed the school is depends on location. Southern schools make a way bigger deal out of their high school football team than Northeast and West coast schools. Baseball and Basketball get obsessed too but I think football is really an outlier for high school level.

I’ve lived in every region of America except the PNW. Football is a big deal everywhere. In the south, high school football matters to the whole town in any mid sized or smaller location. But coast to coast it matters more than anything else to everyone involved in the school. I moved almost every school year (and 3 times in 8th grade) and in every school the football team was the most important thing about the school.

Football is autumn and winter, basketball is winter and spring, and baseball is late spring through summer into fall. That's the basic guideline anyway, it varies based on other stuff sometimes (IE, high school sports teams will have different schedules than college or pro teams) but it's a good rule of thumb.

Whether kids get competitive about them depends on what sport and what part of the country. If you're in Texas or the South, for example, people are going to care a hell of a lot about football. If you're in Indiana, people are going to take basketball like it's religion. Etc. It's very regionalized, there's no one guideline. In general I think basketball and football are the only two that people really go crazy for at the high school and collegiate level though.

In high school, football generally starts with the school year in August/September (though practice may begin a month in advance, depending on the school) and ends in October/November (but there are regional games and championship games after the regular season, so depending on how good the team is, it may extend into December), basketball generally starts in November/December and ends in February/March (again practice and postseason games may extend this), and baseball generally starts in March and ends with the school year in May/June (and yes, practice and postseason games may extend this).

Some kids do get really competitive, but some kids just see it as a part of their school life. The location, community size, school size (because that determines what other schools you play), and the school funding all have some influence on how serious the community, students, and students' parents take everything. Sports games tickets and concession can be a big part of funding school activities.

Those are the big three and the ones most pay attention to. Most schools have track & field (Spring) and cross country (Fall). Most schools have cheerleading (year-round). Many schools have wrestling (Winter), volleyball (Fall), and softball (Spring). But there are a myriad of sports out there that schools will have depending on their budgets and locations (and if someone has the drive to have a competitive program) - swimming, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, golf, archery, bowling, tennis, ice hockey, gymnastics, fencing, skiing, etc. Theoretically, a student can compete in a Fall, Winter, and a Spring sport, but there is some overlap and that can make for an exhausting schedule, and it depends on how the school structures it.

My niece went to the University of Georgia. During football season, students who paid for parking had to give up their parking spots so that visitors could get better parking to watch the game. She ended up parking in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

This was at least twenty years ago so I don't know how much has changed but I imagine not a lot.

Shower Routine?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been a while since I've seen a thread for this, so I want to ask...
FS how often do you bathe/shower?

Are you someone who does quick showers and so you have a 3 in 1 body wash/shampoo/conditioner? Are you someone who has a specific step by step process?

Share as much or as little as you want

Re: Shower Routine?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Daily. I sweat too much not to shower daily. It's relatively quick, no more than 15 minutes where I shampoo first, then condition. I leave the conditioner in while I wash using a moisturizing soap and washcloth, and shave if needed. Then I rinse out the conditioner and I'm done.

Shampoo and bar soap. Nothing special. Once a day unless I did some strenuous activity. 10-15 minutes?

Used to shower in the mornings before school while a student, but later on realized that showering before bed keeps my bed cleaner, lol.

How do you wash your asshole? I hesitate to use my hands because then I feel like my hand becomes dirty. I mostly just part the cheeks and rinse.

i shower once a day to wash my body but I only shampoo every 3-4 days unless I’ve been sweating.

Re: Shower Routine?

Get in shower
Get hair wet
Condition hair
Wash body
Shampoo hair
Once and a while use exfoliater
Rinse

I shampoo first if I got my hair particularly dirty or sweaty or it just needs a deep clean.

Re: Shower Routine?

I shower every day as I am an oily person who needs a shower after I wake up to feel clean, so I have two versions:

Half-shower/quick shower: I'm just washing my body, hair goes up in a bun, I clean my body and then get out to wash my face, brush my teeth, anything else I need to do before getting dressed. I do this most days and it takes about 5-7 mins.

Full-shower/long shower: where I shampoo/condition my hair along with washing my body(cleaning face, brushing teeth, etc), I only do this twice a week as it takes a long time to rinse my hair out and dry it so I save it for days off typically unless I'm going somewhere nice on those days then I'll do it in the evening the day before.

Daily quick shower, longer showing with hair washing 2-3 times a week.

Daily.

Rinse. Using a wash cloth (soaped by a bar of soap), I scrub myself clean -- from behind the ears to my toes, and everywhere in between. Then rinse off. If my OCD is running, I might do that one or two more times, because I don't feel clean enough. I wash my hair once a week bc of its texture. Then I get dry and lotion up. Exfoliate with a brush every now and then. The end.

I shower on average every 3rd day, sometimes more, rarely less.

Wash hair, put conditioner in, was body, shave if I feel like it, rinse conditioner, and done!

Daily. I sweat too much in summer/warm weather. Intimate wash (especially if it's that time of the month), body wash down to my feet, shampoo.

Every day after work. Since I'm often helping the ladies with toileting and showering and changing, I just really feel the need for a shower after. Got my spiffy goat's milk soap and my hemp shampoo and it's nice to wash the day down the drain.

Unless I'm feeling really tense/sore, I usually don't take TOO long - don't like paying for that! And unless i've been really physical and am overheated, even in summer my showers tend to be warm-to-hot. Don't like cool or cold unless I'm dying from weedwhacking the yard or something.

The products I use vary a lot.
I like experimenting with shower products.
The different scents are fun.

Non-Fandom Secrets

It’s late but I’ve got something spill.

Re: Non-Fandom Secrets

(Anonymous) 2024-08-19 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I never stuttered as a child. This is a secret because I do sometimes as an adult. It’s more believable to people that it’s a childhood obstacle that I overcame that haunts me when I’m very tired, so I just lie. It’s also easier to roll with the assumptions than to explain deeply personal things in an already awkward and embarrassing situation.

Brought to you tonight by the scared look on my husband’s face when I could barely speak this evening.

Not really a secret but more a rant I want to post anonymously.

But I'm looking for a new therapist right now, and why the hell are there so many therapists where I live who are basically like... New Age hippies? Like, there's just a massive flood of people whose only qualifications or credentials are from dodgy non-accredited New Age "spirituality" schools. Not to mention the people who describe themselves as "shamans".

Do people really want this from their therapists? Like. I want to talk to someone who's trained in a reputable institution based on evidence for practices that actually consistently work, not someone who's basing everything on some grand spiritual vision.

I am such in a bad state of IDGAF at work. Like I'm sick af of some of my coworkers but I don't want to do the adult thing and actually communicate with them over stuff I think is common sense. But nothing will get resolved that way. Though on the other hand, when I last tried to discuss shit, they acted like nothing I was saying was a priority and now I just avoid talking to them as much as possible because it's clear they don't care. And it's not my job to hold them accountable for anything. And I feel like all my peeves are unwarranted and I'm being ridiculous because everyone's busy. But it's a goddamn struggle working up all the energy to do the very basic, very easy, literally a brain dead monkey could do it, task of communicating with another person. I'm fighting it all the way.

What are your favorite late night tv shows?

I've always loved Colbert. Getting into Seth Myers now on Youtube as well, though.
