Is this about Chilchuck being short?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
If I had to guess, I'd say it's more about how the fandom can get really weird/infantilizing with the autistic-Laios headcanon? (But to your point, Chilchuck is my favorite character and I DEFINITELY think there's a portion of the fandom that fully buys into the "short adults are minor-coded!!!!1" mentality; the amount of times I've seen people call him a "legal shota" or whatever because he's short and babyfaced makes me want to walk into the ocean.)

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't watched the show yet, but one of my friends loves it and from what I hear, doesn't canon make the point that he's actually old and not a shota with a superficial high number for an age? Like he has the grumpy old man personality and has grandkids who we see and all that?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT
Not grandkids but he does have adult children, yep. We're even shown what he would look like as a human and in any other series his human self would be some bearded NPC rando. It's pretty awesome actually.

It's about Mithrun getting daily life assistance by Kabru for a while and some Labru shippers saying Mithrun is too disabled to be in a relationship.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I also assumed it was about Laios and autism, Mithrun didn't even occur to me as a possibility. It's seems like a bad faith argument, too, with a character who literally doesn't do anything he doesn't feel like doing.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Anime-onlies haven't even gotten to Mithrun yet, right? Rest assured that'll change when the anime gets there. Like clockwork.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
The main people who hate on the ship are people who are manga readers. We also don't know yet how many of the Kabumisu relevant scenes the anime will touch and even if it does, a lot of anime-onlies are already invested in Labru and thing can only get worse on the ship war front.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm only peripherally into this fandom, and I thought the big pairings (Marcille/Falin and Laios/Kabru) were mutually exclusive? Is there something going on with Shuro as well?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
If I had to guess (and it IS a guess), this is beef between Kabru/Laios people and Kabru/Mithrun people. For the purposes of this guess, I'm assuming Kabru/Mithrun people are saying ableist things about Laios. But again, pure speculation here!

If correct, this bites because both pairings are good actually \o/

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
OP
You're half right. It's between Labru and Kabumisu, but it's some of the Labru people who are literally saying Mithrun being disabled means he can't possibly be in a relationship, especially with the guy who kinda takes care of him for a while.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
My guess would be the other way around - Mithrun is pretty explictly shown as disabled in canon, in a way Laios, for all of his autistic traits, isn't; Mithrun needs help just to handle basic self-care tasks, and major accomodations in order to do his work, and I can visualize exactly how opposing shippers would turn "he needs help with stuff" into reasons it's "problematic" to ship him.

Am glad my fandom engagement is entirely reblogged femslash art and reading Chilchuck/Senshi on AO3, I think.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, nearly every character (or at least the ones who can be in opposing ships) can be read as some form of neurodivergent or disabled that I'm having a hard time figuring out what pairing this secret is talking about.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
It's Kabru and Mithrun, getting told by Laios Labru shippers theirs ship is bad because Mithrun is too disabled to be in a relationship.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
DA Wow, good times, do the Laios people not remember the giant wank of just a few months ago when Laios was too autistic to be in a relationship???

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
It's different when they do it, I guess. To be fair, it's not a majority, but the vocal minority who does it is so bafflingly unapologetic about their ableism, it's almost fascinating.

AYRT
Ohhh I hate that. That's...that's shitty.

I think Mithrun wanting a relationship at all would have to take place pretty far after canon ends.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's pretty much the setting for most content. Still, there's plenty of canon shippy content for this ship in canon, it's not entirely out of thin air. Not more than most other ships at least.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Dungeon Meshi fandom really exemplifies the shit I find most exhausting in fandom nowadays, where like... the correct way to interact with the characters is to abstract them out to their marginalizable aspects (their disabilities/neurodivergences, races, fantasy races also apparently) and be more concerned with what A Traumatized Brown Person saying to A Neurodivergent Person in this situation says and what that means, than just what the two characters say to each other.

Like, Kabru and Mithrun can't just be a ship, because you have to concern-troll about the optics of a brown man playing caretaker to a white elf(?). Or see basically any take on the Laios vs Shuro conflict (neurotypical person shitting on autistic man? Asian man taking it out on microaggressing white weeb?), or people getting tetchy about M/M being shipped at all when Farcille exists.

Like, how do you people live like this? It's unbearable.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Farcille being such a juggernaut is making me avoid watching the show. The ship sounds so, so boring and unless that's simply fandom making interesting dynamics boring for the sake of being wholesome and unproblematic as is often the case, especially with F/F, I am not going to ship it no matter how good the show is. And then fandom would get on my case for ignoring the F/F, because it's not enough to just not bash the things; ignoring a particular female character or F/F ship you don't like is the same as being a raging misogynist.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
In the fic it's actually mostly a background pairing that I've seen (probably because like you mentioned we don't really get enough Falin onscreen to make it as interesting as a story.) There's lots of interesting fanart though at least if you're into monster girls at all. I definitely wish there was less moaning about fanwriters ignoring it, for sure.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-22 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I love Dungeon Meshi but the fandom has completely soured me on Farcille; I was already not that invested in it because I really struggle to find Falin interesting, but the amount of people who take the existence of any other ship--even ones that don't involve Falin or Marcille--as a lesbophobic hate crime are just unbearable. (I get the feeling sometimes that a lot of newer/anime-only fans must have mainlined a bunch of Farcille fanart before getting into the series and have convinced themselves that DunMesh is the Yuri Series Of The Century when it is...very much not that lmao)

Anyway! I'm a Chilchuck/Marcille fan, so I cope by staying in my lane and only interacting with people from our tiny-but-mighty Discord server.
