What's Your 'Life-changing' Movie/show/media?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Has there been a movie/show/media that has changed your life in some way? Like having a new outlook on life or made you realize something about yourself?

Science fiction! I got hauled bodily into Fandom and then I had a community of weirdoes exactly like me. I was so lonely as a kid.

Legend of the Seeker helped me realize my bisexuality.

Harry Potter and Star Wars got me through a fairly miserable childhood.

Tolkien helped me find myself and gave me a sense of hope when I was in a dark place mentally.

Jackson Galaxy helped me understand cats and therefore helped me find my kitty.

Lmao, relevant to secret 3, a whole ton of media with characters who the secret OP would say are not nonbinary but who nevertheless certainly appealed to me for ~SOME~ reason, helped me realize I'm nonbinary. A big one was studying The Tempest in school and the teacher explaining that Ariel was "written as male but usually played by a female actress nowadays" and my brain interpreted that in some revealing ways, as I read it I had a feeling it wasn't as simple as a Peter Pan situation where a definitely male character was played by a woman for reasons.

The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings (books) got me through childhood and adolescence when nothing else helped.

Henry V 1989 helped me through a tough divorce by reminding me that the underdog can sometimes win.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles helped me figure out my autism and ADHD. I'm 38.

Star Wars: A New Hope was pretty important to the development of my empathy. I saw it in the theater in 1980 (it was a rerelease or connected to the Empire Strikes Back release or maybe even still in theaters). I started to understand that there were people outside those I knew that had hopes and dreams and feelings, that even if they were in another city or country (or planet), they mattered. I was five so I probably would've learned it soon anyway, but I really remember it for that (and, yeah, the epic space opera that it was).

A Dorothy Parker poem I read in, geez, 4th or 5th grade? (It wasn't assigned; I just found a YA poetry anthology in the classroom and read it for fun)

RESUMÉ

Razors pain you;
Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you;
And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren’t lawful;
Nooses give;
Gas smells awful;
You might as well live.

Oh man Resume was a BIG one for me as well! About the same age, maybe a little older-- 6th grade or so? Guessing based on the house I think I lived in at the time. But it became one that I would recite to myself for inspiration a lot.

Inspired by 2

(Anonymous) 2024-08-22 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone want to share some real life love at first sight stories? (With acknowledgement that it was probably strong attraction or lust, at least at first.)

My great-grandfather was visiting his married sister in the next town over from his when he saw my great-grandmother sitting in a window. They were both about twenty. He bugged her little sister to introduce him. They ran away together three days later and were married until his death in the war (15 or so years). My grandmother used to say they were always far more interested in each other than their two children.

My parents were love at first sight. Mom saw dad and told her friends she was gonna marry him. Dad saw mom and told his friends he’d see them in school the next week. They got married 2.5 years later and were together until her death 3 years ago. They were married 55.5 years.
And yeah obviously it was lust at first sight but both swear they knew there was something more. Each thought the other was special at first sight in a way they never did about anybody else.

Watching that Lou Pearlman documentary

(Anonymous) 2024-08-22 01:57 am (UTC)(link)

Holy shit, Nick Carter was only 13 years old when Backstreet Boys started??? Wow!

What's tripping me out about it is that I had in my head way back when that he was, you know, early 20s or something, when this puts him at only 18 around the height of their popularity. That's close enough in age that we'd have been in high school at the same time (granted, he'd have been a senior when I was a freshman, but still).

Anyway, I am sure there are going to be far more shocking things in this doc than the ages of the Backstreet Boys, but hey, I'm only 10 minutes in.

Fuck Lou Pearlman. I always thought he was a piece of shit and I hope he's burning in hell with hot pokers up his ass.

AYRT

I...honestly don't want that, because I don't think anyone deserves eternal punishment.

But he was definitely a giant exploitative POS.

Yes! All the guys were pretty young, especially Nick. I remember there was so much talk about him struggling with his voice when they recorded Millennium because he'd gone through puberty (and later found out from a video about Michael Jackson that the ages of about 16-21 are the hardest years for boys'/mens' vocal cords).

Rec lists?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-22 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Are they still a thing? I used to get the majority of my new fic from various people I followed that wouod share fic.

Re: Rec lists?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-22 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn, I miss those. little blurbs and why the person liked it...I used to go on LJ to find those. I think AO3 has a feature like that -- or I use people's bookmarks in that manner.

For a long time, I've been thinking of having a rec list on my DW...but I don't even know how I'd get people to check it out.
