I like the idea of representation, but I don't want it to be THE plot, if that makes any sense. So... big yes for fantasy settings based on Asian cultures, but no thanks to stories about Asians struggling with issues about race and xenophobia. For example, didn't really enjoy Iron Widow because I thought it was going to be a kickass novel about giant robot battles and it turned out to be a weird mish-mash of gender role stuff and the author's OT3, which I was only kind of meh about because there weren't enough robot battles.

Gender role stuff was very much a selling point in the promotion of Iron Widow though? I get that if you heard some rando tell you it was going to be all giant mecha fights (of which there were plenty enough for me, but I get YMMV) and didn't mention anything else, you'd be disappointed, but that's false advertising on the part of the rando who told you that, not on the part of the book.

I didn't read/listen to any book reviews before reading the novel. I just read the brief summary, so while I expected gender role stuff to play a role, I didn't expect it to play a BIGGER role than the giant mecha fights.
