No no no, I had the third option best of both worlds: no car of my personal own, but a sporty car belonging to my parents that I could borrow anytime no questions asked. My 'rents had a Ford Thunderbird turbo, my siblings and I all trained and passed our driver's tests in that thing. But it wasn't our car, it was still the family car, so I had about a year of free use before the next youngest got dibs. Yet, our social circles didn't overlap so we were never forced to fight for the car on the same night.

I still remember "the guys" asking me to pop the hood at a friday night football game, I did so but then came around to ask "what are you looking at?" and one genuinely said "I don't know, but this feels like the guy thing to do."
