would you rather

Looking back: when you were a teen, would you rather have had a beat up old car you could could cruise around in with your friends and not worry about putting a few more dings and dents in it if you misjudged a corner or parked in an unwise place; or would you rather have had that cool sporty new car which everyone envies in the parking lot?

When I was a teen, I so wanted that BMW 3 convertible. Looking back though, I think I had better fun in the old Jetta. Even if I did smack it into a couple of walls.

Well, I didn't have a car at all, or friends for that matter, so I guess the beat up old car? I do think it's best to get used to driving any car before you start thinking about shiny toys.

NAYRT but same lol. I didn't start driving until I was 23 and even then my first car was used.

One of my friends when I was a teenager actually had the perfect combination here: an old slightly beat-up sports car from the 60s.

I wanted exactly what I ended up with: a used but sound car that wasn’t flashy, had only six cylinders, and had the latest safety technology without a ton of bells and whistles (none, to be exact). I did know people who drove the two kinds of death traps you mentioned and in the case of the flashy car, the kid died. In the junk car, no one died but a girl did get tossed out and landed on her head. It rewrote her entire personality and last I heard she still hadn’t learned to tie her shoes.

I'd prefer the old car, so long as it was reliable. A brand new expensive car would've been nerve wracking to drive, because while I was a careful driver, my parents were/are the type to throw a fit at the tiniest dent or scratch.

my dad would let me borrow his old beat up truck but he would give me mega shit for the dings i've put in that bad boy, oops lol.
i've never wanted the fancy new car, then or now.

I sort of had both. The beat up old (luxury) car died about a month after my mom got it, so we went for a former rental SUV (I lived in the boondocks).

I didn’t know how to drive when I was a teen, but if I had, I probably would’ve gone for the beat up car.

I think I would have sold either car and spend money going to as many conventions as possible.

With being said I live in the city and don't use a car anyways, so I can't appreciate it in the same way.

No no no, I had the third option best of both worlds: no car of my personal own, but a sporty car belonging to my parents that I could borrow anytime no questions asked. My 'rents had a Ford Thunderbird turbo, my siblings and I all trained and passed our driver's tests in that thing. But it wasn't our car, it was still the family car, so I had about a year of free use before the next youngest got dibs. Yet, our social circles didn't overlap so we were never forced to fight for the car on the same night.

I still remember "the guys" asking me to pop the hood at a friday night football game, I did so but then came around to ask "what are you looking at?" and one genuinely said "I don't know, but this feels like the guy thing to do."

I didn't get my own car until I was 20, but it was a beat-up cheapie and it was perfect for its purposes (no long road trips, just driving to work and tooling around.)

My husband and I now have a nicer, newer car (not an expensive sports car, but a medium sort of SUV) and an old, beat-up SUV that's 20 years old, and these both have their purposes too. We don't worry about the old one and take that to the beach or let our nieces and nephews drive it when they visit.

I had the beat up old car but I had so many car issues I would rather get a fancy new car just for the sheer desire to have gotten a different experience.
