I just don't care for the sound of her music, it's not my style. I feel like a lot of the current music that is supposed to be popular among queer women is just not the sound I enjoy, even though I am also a queer woman.

The moment anyone starts that 'if you're queer you're meant to like/hate x/y' crap I tune out. We're not a monolith and we all have our own personal likes and tastes, you're not a better gay for liking her music or a better one for not. It's personal preference ffs.

All of this.

Also, not liking someone's music does not equal not liking or even not supporting them! You can support fellow queers or women or whatever and be happy for them but also not like whatever product they are putting out. It is not one or the other.

My least favorite is when a queer artist or media centering on queer relationships is decided on as "queerness for the straights." It can make queer people who like and relate to it and may have even discovered their queerness through it feel like they've been tricked by their own brains into thinking they're queer when they're really not, because "real" queer people would never like that thing.

Shout out to all the queer adults implying baby queers are straight because they liked Love, Simon.

I tried listening to her music and while I liked a few of her songs I mostly couldn't get into it. I'm sure she's great fun for those who like her! But her sound isn't for me.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-27 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
I like her songs, but I have zero interest in her personally, or her persona or anything she says about politics or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-26 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not into any of the popular queer artists that people are into right now (mostly because it's all pop, or pop-adjacent). It's pretty annoying when people act like as a queer person, you should love this or that artist.

I don't know who this is (and I'm queer, so, lol) but is this picture indicative of her normal style? This photo is not a look I would describe as heavily sexualized hyper-femininity. At all.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-27 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
This is actually a really toned down look for her. A lot of the pics I've seen of her are kind of burlesque-y

I can't read this.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-27 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Neither can I. I thought this would be the leading comment--lots of people talking about how they can't read the secret--but apparently not.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-27 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think her stage looks are really cool but I don't like the sound of her music at all and I also kinda... don't... like the personality she seems to put on?

I mean, she's got a point that when she's not working, she TOTALLY ought to be able to have her space and privacy, no argument from me there, but her posts and talks about that feel kind of...

Whiny?

Again, she's totally right she should be able to have her space and privacy. She is also def. dealing with her sudden explosion of fame after being around for a while but very minorly so.

But I dunno. She just comes off as whiny, even while she's making good points. It makes me kind of meh about her, when I'm already not a fan of her sound.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-27 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
How the fuck is it whiny? Our culture has insane norms about behavior towards celebrities. There's nothing whiny about objecting to those insane norms.

I don’t care for her music at all but dude she is more than allowed to set boundaries, especially with how fucking weird some fans can get. Her safety and mental well being trumps a fans feelings over being told to leave her alone when she isn’t working.

Hayley Kiyoko and Janelle Monaé were in the game years before Chappel Roan, but we all know why they don't count.

... is what I would say if I were interested in reverse-Uno-ing SJ digs of that sort.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-27 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Rina Sawayama as well but she lucky to even get a mention.

Don't count as what? They were both extremely popular back when they were newer and not past their heyday. In fact I would venture to say more popular, since I actually heard of them in the media and I had never heard of whoever the hell this secret is about until... this secret.

Yeah, I'm also not a fan and just about everyone I know is obsessed with her to some degree. It's just not music I enjoy. I'm glad for her, and love to see openly queer artists get so much love, but I just wish people in fandom especially lately be more... uh, understanding, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-27 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
You do you, boo!

(Anonymous) 2024-08-27 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I really like her music, but I understand how dumb it is where people do the whole 'if you were REALLY a good person, you'd read/watch/listen to THIS' nonsense.

It's definitely one way to put people off of getting into any kind of media when its being made into something mandatory. Reminds me of a post on Tumblr several years ago where people would demand people to read/watch queer titles without any explanation other than 'it's got *insert alphabet soup acronym here*, the plot doesn't matter' and not doing so made you evil and a bad queer -_-

(Anonymous) 2024-08-27 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Same! I think Chappell Roan is great, but there's plenty of queer artists that I don't like at all, and I don't think I'm a bad person for that.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-27 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I do like several of her songs but I don't like Good Luck Babe at all, mostly because I have no idea what she's singing for half the song.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-27 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
oh I'm so glad I'm not alone in disliking that song; I enjoy a lot of her music but Good Luck Babe is like nails on a chalkboard to me
